The 5 Days Mount Kenya hike is a great hiking safari package made to meet the needs of all hiking lovers. It takes you to Mt. Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa, which rises to 5,199 meters.
Mt. Kenya is an extinct volcano that is more than 2.5 million years old and is located about 200 km north of Nairobi.
This mountain is found inside Mount Kenya National Park and has three main peaks: Point Lenana (4,985m), Nelion, and Batian. This hike follows two main routes to reach and descend from the summit.
You will go up using the Sirimon route and come down using the Chogoria route. The hike offers clear views of the Gorges Valley, Lake Ellis, and Lake Michelson.
Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Nairobi to Mount Kenya
Leave Nairobi and drive for about 3 hours to Chogoria. Stop for lunch, then continue by 4×4 safari vehicle to the edge of the bamboo forest. From there, begin a 10 km hike to reach the Mount Kenya bandas for your first night.
Day 2: Hike to Lake Ellis Campsite – 3,600 meters
Start the day with a hot cup of tea or coffee. With your porter, hike through the Lake Ellis area while enjoying views of Ithanguni, Mugi, and the giant billiards table. If you take the Riverside route, hike 3 km upstream and enjoy the natural beauty around you. Have lunch by the stream, then continue to the campsite at 3,600 meters for rest.
Day 3: Hike to Minto Camp – 4,200 meters
After breakfast, begin hiking up a ridge for about 3 hours until you join the tourist track along the Chogoria route at 4,100 meters. From here, enjoy wide views of the Gorges Valley and look back at Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands. Stop for lunch by a small stream, then walk on to Mintos Hut at 4,200 meters. After resting, you may take a short 10-minute walk to the “Temple” viewpoint and then return to Mintos Hut for the night.
Day 4: Summit Point Lenana (4,985 meters) and descend to Old Moses Camp
After breakfast, hike to Point Lenana, the third highest peak on Mt. Kenya. From the summit, begin your descent through Shipton Camp and Mackinder’s Valley until you reach Old Moses Camp at 3,300 meters. Enjoy a relaxed walk and take in the views of the Moorlands along the way.
Day 5: Walk to Sirimon Gate and Drive Back to Nairobi
Have a warm cup of tea or coffee, then walk for about 3 hours to the Sirimon Park Gate where your driver-guide will be waiting. From there, drive back to Nairobi, marking the end of your 5 Days Mount Kenya hike.
