Colobus monkey trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park, Rwanda, is an amazing activity. The permits are very affordable for all tourists. Nyungwe Forest is home to about 13 species of interesting primates. Among these, the forest is best known for its chimpanzees, which dominate the area.

The forest is located south of the famous Virunga region. It has many tall trees, along with montane vegetation and bamboo, which are feeding areas for some of the primates. The forest is also home to smaller animals like mongooses and larger animals such as elephants. It has a wide variety of plants and birds that live and breed there.

The total number of colobus monkeys in Nyungwe is about 400.

These monkeys include both black and white colobus monkeys. Trekkers often encounter other monkey species in the forest, such as red-faced monkeys. From Kigali City, the forest park is only a few kilometers away, and it takes about three hours to drive there.

On the main route, visitors can pass by the National Museum and the King’s Palace in Nyanza. Those interested can make quick stops to tour these places. Another route is through Cyamudongo, from where Butare can be reached in about an hour.

Visitors who want an aerial view on their way to Nyungwe can also use flight services from Kigali Airport. Charter flights land at Kamembe International Airport, and from there, it is only a short drive to the Uwinka Ranger Station, where the park’s headquarters are located.

How Much Is Colobus Monkey Trekking in Nyungwe Forest?

A permit to trek colobus monkeys costs about 40 USD each. However, visitors should note that this fee does not include entry charges to Nyungwe Forest National Park. They need to carry extra money to pay for park entry.

For accommodation near the park, visitors can choose from options like Nyungwe Top View Hotel, One&Only Nyungwe House (which also offers helicopter flight services from Rwanda’s national airport), and Nyungwe Nziza Eco-Lodge.
