Detailed 5-Day Rwanda Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
On the first day of your safari holiday, you will be welcomed by our tour company representative and guide upon arrival in Rwanda. After a short briefing, you will transfer to Kigali for lunch and then proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park in southern Rwanda.
Nyungwe Forest is about six hours from Kigali City, making it the most remote national park in Rwanda. The journey offers views of the lush Rwandan countryside, with a stop at the National Museum of Rwanda in Butare. You will arrive at Nyungwe late in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
This day requires an early morning start. Wake up at 5:00 am, have a hearty breakfast, and transfer to the park meeting point to join the rangers. You will then head into Nyungwe Forest to locate the chimpanzees before they wake up.
Finding the chimps early ensures you have more time with them, as they are harder to track once they start moving through the rough terrain. Spend a full hour observing them, then return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a canopy walk over Nyungwe Forest. This experience offers incredible views and opportunities to see birds and primates. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Twin Lakes Visit
On this day, transfer from Nyungwe Forest in southern Rwanda to Volcanoes National Park in the northern province. The drive takes about six to seven hours, depending on road conditions.
Have lunch en route, and upon arrival at Volcanoes National Park, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. After the visit, check into your lodge for dinner and overnight as you prepare for the gorilla trekking experience the next day.
Day 4: Gorilla Tracking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Visit
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing about gorilla trekking. You will then enter the forest to track mountain gorillas. Once you locate a gorilla family, you will spend a full hour observing and photographing them.
Afterward, return to the park headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate and then to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to enjoy Rwandan dances, storytelling, and other cultural activities. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Golden Monkey Tracking and Transfer to Kigali
On the final day, participate in golden monkey tracking. This activity lasts two to five hours, including a full hour of close interaction with the monkeys once located.
After the golden monkey tracking experience, return to your lodge for lunch. Later, transfer back to Kigali for your onward flight home.
