Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Wildlife Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park
After pickup from Kigali, travel to Akagera National Park, located along the border with Tanzania. The park gets its name from the Akagera River, which runs along the border. It is home to the Big Five animals and rare birds like the shoebill stork.
In the evening, you can either take an optional game drive to begin exploring the Savannah plains or head to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.
Day 2: Game Drive and Boat Cruise
Start your day with a morning game drive, followed by an afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema. During these activities, you will spot various wildlife such as lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, hippos, warthogs, zebras, crocodiles, and birds like the rare shoebill stork.
You may also see antelopes like bushbucks, waterbucks, Jackson’s hartebeests, and duikers. Afterward, return to your lodge for accommodation and rest.
Day 3: Hot Air Balloon Ride in Akagera National Park
After breakfast, enjoy another adventure—a Rwanda balloon safari. A short game drive will take you to the starting point of the balloon ride.
This unique experience offers an aerial view of the endless Savannah plains and its wildlife. You will see animals feeding, drinking water, and birds flying overhead. After the ride, enjoy a glass of champagne or juice. The hot air balloon experience lasts about two hours and provides amazing memories and opportunities for aerial photography.
Day 4: Return to Kigali, City Tour, and Departure
In the morning, leave Akagera National Park and head back to Kigali. Take a short city tour, visiting sites such as the Belgian Peacemakers Monument, art museums, and local markets.
At the markets, you can buy fresh and dried food items, clothes, and electronics. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a historical site where thousands of Rwandan Tutsis were tragically killed.
End the tour by visiting art centers to purchase handmade crafts as souvenirs. Finally, be dropped off at the airport for your departure.
