5-Day Gorilla Trek & Ngorongoro Wildlife Safari | Rwanda to Tanzania

This 5-Day Gorilla Trek & Ngorongoro Wildlife Safari includes visits to mountain gorillas in Rwanda and the Big 5 cats in one of the planet’s largest calderas.

The two countries are neighbors, and one experience definitely leads to another.

Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with its variety of flora and fauna, is part of the northern safari circuit.

A day in Rwanda includes a visit to Volcanoes National Park, the home of highly sought-after mountain gorillas, which are the closest living relatives of humans.

Trekking them requires a certain level of physical fitness, while a game drive provides unmatched views of the stunning scenery and wildlife.

It’s a journey by car that starts in Kigali and concludes in Arusha, Tanzania.

5-Day Gorilla Trek & Ngorongoro Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick Up and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon your arrival at the airport for your 5-Day Gorilla Trek & Ngorongoro Wildlife Safari, a representative from our company will be waiting for you at the designated arrivals lounge.

The driver/guide will provide you with a briefing while you enjoy a refreshing juice and learn what to expect from your safari.

Afterward, you will visit nearby historical and cultural attractions before taking a lunch break.

Explore Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, art galleries, and other places to learn about the history of the Tutsi and Hutu ethnic strife in 1994.

After the city tour and lunch, you will travel to Volcanoes National Park in the north, a journey that takes about 2-3 hours, allowing you to admire the breathtaking scenery and dotted homesteads.

Upon arrival, the hotel will welcome you with a refreshing drink before you check in for dinner and the night.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes NP

After breakfast, gather your packed lunch, trekking permit, and other necessary items.

The ranger guides will provide a pre-trek briefing at the park’s ranger stations, where they will explain the dos and don’ts of trekking and what to expect in the jungle.

The national park known as Volcanoes is located at the base of the enormous Virunga chain of Mountains.

The action begins after the briefing as you follow the direction where a gorilla family was last seen.

You will hike through lush forests, encountering additional birds, primates, unusual flora, and nests.

After locating the gorillas, you will spend an hour with them, taking photos while observing the silverbacks protecting their family and mothers caring for the young ones.

Gorilla trekking can take between 2 and 8 hours, with an additional hour added depending on how far the gorillas have traveled.

After a picnic lunch, you will return to the lodge to relax or choose from additional tour options, such as a cultural tour to the Gorilla Guardians Village or a nature walk.

The day concludes with dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Return to Kigali and Fly to Arusha, Tanzania

After breakfast, leave Volcanoes National Park to return to Kigali, where you will catch a flight to Arusha airport in northern Tanzania.

Upon arrival, you will proceed with a drive to the Ngorongoro crater area.

It’s a day of travel with only a lunch break and stops at various safari locations.

Your driver guide will brief you on what to expect on a safari in Tanzania before you check into your lodge for the night.

The sounds and sights of prey, predators, and birds await you the next day.

Day 4: Game Drive in the Ngorongoro Crater

A delightful breakfast at the lodge sets the tone for your day.

Afterward, check out and take a packed lunch as you transfer to the wilderness of Ngorongoro.

You will spend the entire day exploring one of the world’s natural wonders and its inhabitants, with lunch and breaks taken outdoors.

While lions, hyenas, and leopards are not easy to spot in the crater, luck may allow you to encounter some prey and predator creatures during your game drive.

The best time to observe them is in the evening, though.

The list of animals to sight is extensive, including various antelope species, warthogs, buffaloes, lions, leopards, wildebeests, hyenas, and other animals.

The birds are a unique and magnificent sight and sound.

After a lunch break on the game drive, you will have an evening game viewing tour of the caldera to observe different animal dens.

After dinner, spend the night at the same lodge.

Day 5: Departure

Following a morning tea break, check out of the lodge and be transported back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport for your departure. This marks the end of your 5-Day Gorilla Trek & Ngorongoro Wildlife Safari.

Activities on this day will depend on your schedule and flight departure time.
