35 Days Mega East Africa Tour – Best of Primates & Wildlife

35 Days East African tour is a complete expedition introducing you to the leading 5 East African destinations. The main areas of interest on this long safari package include Uganda, D.R.C, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Plenty of unique experiences are covered on this expedition including wildebeest migration & big 5 game in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, & Tarangire National Park.

This East African tour also encompasses three remarkable gorilla safari destinations (Uganda, DRC & Rwanda). The three African states are home to 1063 mountain gorillas that still exist on the planet earth today. These survive in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes NP (Rwanda), & Virunga National Park (D.R. Congo).

Detailed Itinerary.

Day 1: Arrival at Nairobi & transfer to a hotel

Today will be dedicated for your pick up & transfer to hotel in Nairobi city. This is Kenya’s biggest town & also official capital city, strategically found at close proximity to most of the country’s leading safari destinations including Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre and others. Early arrivals at the airport may allow you pay a visit to some of the nearby tourist sites or simply have a relaxed evening at the hotel.

Day 2: Lake Nakuru National Park (paradise for flamingoes)

Pick up from your respective accommodation facility in Nairobi city & transferred to Lake Nakuru National Park. The journey begins as soon as a briefing about your long trip is done and this will be 155 km to the rift valley area, home to millions of flamingoes. By mid-morning, you will be at the park fully prepared to explore it on a guided wildlife game drive.

A variety of wildlife should be expected to be encountered including elands, zebras, African wild dogs, cape buffaloes, waterbucks, leopards, Rothschild giraffes, lions, and birds like flamingoes.

Day 3: Lake Naivasha & boat ride excursion

Delicious breakfast in the morning, after, set off to the scenic shores from Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha. Get there early for a lunch meal and relaxation at the lodge. Lake Naivasha shelters almost 1500 hippos, 400 species of birds plus various fish species. You will have a rewarding boat cruise excursion on Lake Naivasha to see aquatic life like crocodiles, hippos, birds like kingfishers, great cormorants, pelicans, and more.

Day 4: Road trip to Maasai Mara

Exit your accommodation in Lake Naivasha and drive to the Maasai Mara at the Kenya-Tanzania border. This will be one of the most picturesque drive along the rift valley area and arrive early for lunch and relaxation or have an evening game viewing (optional).

Day 5-6: Full – day expedition in Maasai Mara reserve

Two days will be dedicated for you to explore and experience the Maasai Mara to its fullest. Your expectations on these 2 days include enjoying the breathtaking wildebeest migration, viewing the big 5 game (cape buffaloes, lions, elephants, rhinos, & leopards), plus diversity of other mammal species.

Day 7: Maasai Mara-Serengeti National Park

Start your trip early to Serengeti National Park crossing through the Isebania border between Kenya & Tanzania. As you exit the reserve, you will be spotting some animals and once you arrive, be amazed by the Serengeti endless plains.

Day 8: Full day safari in Serengeti national park

Have breakfast first, and leave for a long day search for Serengeti NP wildlife species in a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle. This includes watching the wildebeest migration, the birds, big five game and other countless animal species.

Day 9: Serengeti to Ngorongoro via Olduvai Gorge

Pick up at the accommodation & drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) with a stop visit at Olduvai Gorge. Explore this rich historical site that provides insight into human evolution then continue to the lodge.

Day 10: Ngorongoro for full day expedition

A full day expedition will be had in Ngorongoro Crater exploring this natural wonder, a complete home to the big 5 game. Besides, other animal species to be spotted include jackals, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and more.

Day 11: Transfer to Lake Manyara national park

Leave Ngorongoro for Lake Manyara NP, Tanzania’s remarkable spot to find tree climbing lions. The park also holds more than 400 species of birds such as flamingoes, pelicans, cormorants, & fish eagles. You will have the best of the afternoon game drive.

Day 12: Tarangire NP & Game Drive

Exit the park for Tarangire NP not far away and you will enjoy a guided game drive for 2-3 hours. This Park is most popular for its huge concentration of African elephants & in East Africa, it comes 2nd, with its landscape featuring acacia and baobab trees.

Day 13: Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport & connect to Entebbe

Pick up & transfer from your accommodation to Kilimanjaro Airport where you will have a connecting flight to Entebbe airport in Uganda. Meet & greet our company representative for transfer to your pre-booked lodge/hotel in Entebbe.

Day 14: Mabamba birding tour

Get up early, enjoy breakfast & later you will have a full day in Mabamba Swamp searching for shoebill storks plus other water birds. Using a canoe/boat, you will navigate through the swamp expecting to sight other birds such as papyrus gonoleks, black-faced rufous warblers, orange weavers, lesser jacanas, Goliath herons, etc.

Day 15: Entebbe to Murchison national park (wildlife trip)

Pick up & transfer to Murchison Falls NP, Northwestern Uganda- the biggest park in the Pearl of Africa. Drive via the Kampala-Gulu highway for 6-7 hours, inclusive of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary visit to track rhinos in the wild. After, continue to Masindi for a meal and finally make it to the top of the falls before check in at the lodge.

Day 16: Full day tour in Murchison Falls National Park

Pick up at accommodation and start exploring Murchison Falls National Park wildlife for 2-3 hours. The morning guided game safari allows you keep an eye on different species such as giraffes, the Jackson’s hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, leopards, lions, cape buffaloes, elephants and many birds.

Afternoon launch cruise excursion begins at 2:00pm at the Paraa Jetty taking you along the Nile till you get to the base of Murchison Falls. The 2-3 recreational experience comes with interesting sightings of crocodiles, hippos & birds.

Day 17: Transfer to Kibale N/park

Pick up & transfer to Kibale N.P, the world’s most popular primate park with 13 primate species including the biggest chimpanzee population of up to 1500. Enjoy the scenic drive via the rift valley escarpment area, and at Fort Portal city, have a lunch break before settling at the lodge in the park.

Day 18: Chimpanzee trekking & Bigodi excursion

Exit your accommodation for briefing about Kibale chimp trekking guidelines. The actual trek to see chimpanzees starts at 8:00 am till midday. A special one hour will be dedicated for your photography & observing the daily behaviors of chimpanzees in the wild. Kibale Forest is a rich primate park and besides chimps, you will also come across l’hoest monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, red tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, & mangabeys plus birds.

Once you retreat, lunch will be provided and at 2:00 pm, transfer to Bigodi wetland –a rich primate and bird wetland. At Bigodi, you will enjoy a guided nature walk with lead of an experienced guide while keeping an eye on primates and birds.

Day 19: Drive to Queen Elizabeth NP

Pick up early morning after breakfast & drive to Queen Elizabeth NP, 3-4 hours’ drive. Take your time because there is more to see en-route including the beautiful Crater Lakes and vast banana plantations. You will have a relaxed day at the accommodation in Queen Elizabeth Park or after lunch, you will go for a game drive in the afternoon.

Day 20: Game drive & boat cruise

Start exploring Queen Elizabeth NP on a guided game drive from 6:00 am with a guide. The Kasenyi plains will be rewarding you different animal sightings including cape buffaloes, elephants, leopards, lions, warthogs, antelope families and birds. In the afternoon, visit Kazinga channel for a launch cruise 2-3 hours, expecting to see hippos, crocodiles and aquatic birds.

Day 21: Transfer to Bwindi via Ishasha sector

Pick up early morning and drive to Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth NP where you will have another chance to see tree climbing lions plus other mammals. Enjoy a bush meal and after, proceed to your accommodation in Bwindi NP.

Day 22: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi

Start a remarkable day to see mountain gorillas with briefing about gorilla trekking guidelines. At 8:00 am, exit the briefing area for actual trekking to locate mountain gorillas and this is likely to go for 2-6 hours including one hour of viewing these apes at a close range but at a distance of 8 meters away while also taking photos.

After, you will walk back and continue to your lodge for relaxation & enjoy some refreshments. Late afternoon includes Batwa community tour to explore how the Batwa pygmies lived in the forest, get entertained by their dances and music performances.

Day 23: Cross to Rwanda

Pick up at the lodge and drive to Rwanda through Katuna or Chanika border with en-route scenic view of hills and farms in Kigezi Region. Clear with the immigration at the border and proceed to the lodge in Volcanoes N/Park in Ruhengeri.

Day 24: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will be picked up at the lodge for briefing at Kinigi offices and today, you will have another opportunity to track mountain gorillas. The Rwanda’s Volcanoes NP has 12 families set for gorilla tourism; each will be visited by maximum of eight tourists. After tracking, settle for refreshment and in the evening, cultural entertainment at Iby’Iwacu village.

Day 25: Golden monkey tracking

Wake up early, have breakfast and later head off for briefing session about golden monkey tracking guidelines. The golden monkey trek takes 2-3 hours inclusive of one hour of a close encounter and photography. Retreat afterwards, and have a relaxed evening at the accommodation facility.

Day 26: To Nyungwe Forest NP (Rwanda)

Pick up and transfer to Nyungwe Forest while viewing Lake Kivu area. Nyungwe lies in the Southern Province and protects the largest primate population such as chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, baboons, plus over 310 bird species.

Day 27: Chimpanzee trekking & canopy walk

A full day expedition in Nyungwe includes morning chimpanzee trekking for 2-4 hours inclusive of one hour of viewing chimpanzees and taking pictures. Get back afterwards, enjoy lunch, relax then connect to Igishigishigi trail for a canopy walk experience.

Day 28: Transfer to D. R. Congo

Meet and greet your driver guide, leave Nyungwe for D.R. Congo via Goma border area. You will connect to Virunga National Park to check in at the lodge.

Day 29: Trek Virunga gorillas & visit Senkwekwe center 

You will be picked up at the lodge and report to Bukima area for briefing. Today marks the 3rd day of tracking mountain gorillas and the Virunga NP has 8 habituated families set for tourism. In the afternoon, you will spend the best part of your day at Senkwekwe center where orphaned mountain gorillas live.

Day 30: Hike to the summit of mount. Nyiragongo

Check out & transfer to Kibati ranger post for briefing and start your hike at around 10:00 am to the summit of Nyiragongo Volcano. This volcano is one of the powerful mountains in the world with record of over 40 eruptions.

Day 31: Descend & cross to Bukavu

Start descending from summits of Nyiragongo & meet the driver guide for transfer to the next destination. Be in Bukavu town early where you will find the pre-booked accommodation for your dinner and relaxation.

Day 32: Track Lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega national park

Transfer from Bukavu to Kahuzi-Biega National Park offices for briefing about lowland gorilla trekking guidelines. This is the only park for you to track the Eastern lowland gorillas and it protects five families already habituated. When you return, have a long evening at the lodge relaxing and sharing your stories.

Day 33: Travel back to Kigali, (Rwanda)

Wake up early, enjoy breakfast & transfer to Kigali, Rwanda’s biggest city. You will be relaxing at the classic lodge or boutique hotel within the city.

Day 34: Kigali city tour

After breakfast, today will be dedicated for you to explore Kigali capital city and its diverse attractions. Among the areas of interest include visiting the genocide memorial centers like Gisozi memorial site, former presidential palace, craft villages, the biggest market –Kimironko and so on.

Day 35: Departure

At leisure, enjoy a cup of tea/coffee & after, pick up then drive to the airport for departure back home. Today brings to an end the 35 days East African tour – in Uganda, D.R. Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania & Kenya.
