This is a short safari that takes you to the Democratic Republic of Congo to visit primates such as the Eastern Lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park through gorilla trekking, and also visit the Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is home to chimpanzees in captivity.
Tourists on a budget gorilla safari in Africa can enjoy this experience while learning about the behavior of these primates.
The safari begins and ends in Rwanda, with an optional city tour in Kigali on the last day. You can visit places like the Genocide Memorial, local markets, and more.
Taking part in this safari is a rewarding experience as you also enjoy the landscapes of two different African countries.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu from Kigali, Rwanda
Leave Kigali after a short briefing by your driver guide about this exciting tour to meet the gorillas. Begin the journey to Bukavu town, where you will spend three nights. On the way to the southern part of Rwanda, you will stop at the former presidential palace in Nyanza and the museum in Butare.
Cross the Rusizi II border and go through the immigration process. Afterward, proceed to check in at the lodge for the night.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
After breakfast, head out for gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. You will first attend a briefing by the park ranger who will explain the rules to follow during the trek. Your permits will be checked, and you will be assigned a gorilla group and a park guide.
The trek begins, and when you find the gorillas, you will take photos and record videos. Watch the gorillas move, play, and feed. Unlike chimpanzees that stay in trees, these gorillas stay mostly on the ground.
You may also observe the group leader displaying its leadership behavior. After the trek, return to the lodge for rest.
Day 3: Visit Chimpanzees at Lwiro Sanctuary
After a relaxed breakfast, visit the Lwiro Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This facility takes care of orphaned and injured chimpanzees. While there, you may take part in daily activities such as feeding the chimps, helping with care routines, and learning about how the sanctuary operates. After the visit, return to the lodge for your last night.
Day 4: Transfer Back to Kigali, Rwanda
Have breakfast and then transfer back to Kigali. On arrival, enjoy a hot buffet lunch followed by a short city tour. You will visit local markets, the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and take a drive up one of the hills that offers a good view of Kigali city. Later, you will be dropped at the airport, marking the end of the tour.
