Detailed 5-Day Akagera Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Pickup and Kigali Tour
Meet your guide at the designated pickup point. You will then proceed to your lodge to check in and freshen up before having an early lunch.
In the evening, enjoy a tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s most charming cities. Visit places like the Kigali Genocide Memorial, craft markets where you can buy souvenirs and practice bargaining, and other historical sites. After the tour, return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 2: Transfer to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park. The journey takes about 2-3 hours and offers scenic views of the countryside, rolling hills, and bustling towns.
Upon arrival, check in at the lodge and relax in your room. In the evening, you can opt for a one-hour nature walk to stretch your legs after the drive. End the day with a delicious dinner and a peaceful evening.
Day 3: Full-Day Game Drive
Start your day with breakfast at the lodge before heading out for a 3-4 hour game drive. Look out for the Big Five: lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos. You may also see giraffes, zebras, primates, and other wildlife. The park’s diverse terrain and plant life add to the beauty of the experience.
Enjoy a bush breakfast and lunch after the morning game drive. Later, relax before going on a sunset game drive, where you have a chance to see nocturnal animals like lions and other hunters. The day ends with dinner and optional activities like a campfire, depending on your lodging.
Day 4: Sunrise Bird Watching and Evening Boat Cruise
After breakfast, join a skilled bird guide for early morning bird watching, the best time to spot birds in Rwanda. Spend 2-3 hours identifying some of the 500 bird species found in Akagera National Park, including the bare-faced go-away bird, African fish eagle, marabou stork, sooty chat, and others.
After the birding excursion, have lunch and then enjoy an afternoon boat cruise. Sail on the lake to see water-bucks, hippos, crocodiles, and other aquatic species up close. The boat cruise lasts about 2-3 hours. Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Departure
