Gorilla Trekking in the Dry Season – Best Time for Uganda & Rwanda

Trekking gorillas in the dry season is highly recommended. The dry season is the best time to trek mountain gorillas.

During this time, the weather is dry, the trails are not muddy or slippery, and the bushes are thinner. This makes it easier to spot gorillas and take clear photos. Roads leading to the national parks are also easier to drive on.

Gorilla trekking involves hiking, so visitors need to be in good physical condition. Trekking during the rainy season can be very difficult due to muddy and slippery trails, which make the forest hard to walk through.

The dry seasons in Rwanda and Uganda are the same. The long dry season runs from June to September, and the short dry season runs from December to February. This is also a good time to visit other wildlife parks in the region.

Dry Season Gorilla Permits

The cost of a gorilla trekking permit depends on the country. In Rwanda, a permit costs $1,500. In Uganda, it costs $800. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the price is $400 during the dry season and $200 in the low season.

What to Bring for Dry Season Gorilla Trekking

Even in the dry season, it can rain in the rain-forest, so you must pack well. Bring waterproof hiking boots, garden gloves, warm and long-sleeved clothes, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of drinking water, and energy snacks, among other things.

It’s important to book your gorilla trekking permits early. During the dry season, there is high demand, and permits become hard to get. You should book your permit 3 to 6 months before your travel date.
