Why Book Gorilla Permits Early?

Below are the reasons why you should book gorilla trekking permits in advance.

High Demand for Gorilla Trekking Permits

Many travelers who visit Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of Congo want to go gorilla trekking. This has led to high demand for permits, which are limited in number. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, so you need to book early before they sell out. Waiting too long, especially during peak travel months, can mean missing out entirely, since only a fixed number of permits are released per gorilla family each day.

Enough Time for Preparation

Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude areas, and trekking to see them requires hiking and physical fitness. Booking your permit early gives you enough time to prepare, including physical exercise and gathering the right gear, such as hiking boots, cameras, lenses, gloves, insect repellent, raincoats, and other equipment. This lead time also gives you the chance to build up stamina gradually, rather than arriving unprepared for a multi-hour hike through steep, uneven terrain.

Timely Booking of Accommodation

This mainly applies to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. The park has four sectors where gorilla trekking takes place, and you need to book a lodge near the sector where your trek will happen. Booking your permit early also helps you secure accommodation in the correct sector, since popular lodges near each sector can fill up quickly during high season, leaving latecomers with longer daily transfers to the trailhead.

Shortage of Gorilla Permits

Another reason to book your permit early is that permits are limited. Rwanda charges $1,500 for a gorilla permit, which is expensive. Congo offers cheaper permits at $400, but the country is not always secure. Uganda has become the best option for most travelers because it is safe and the permit costs $800. This has driven high demand in Uganda, so you must book 3 to 6 months in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly if you have a fixed travel date you cannot easily change.

Planning Ahead for a Smooth Trip

All travelers planning to go gorilla trekking should book their permits early and either pay in full or make a deposit to reserve the permit. Arriving in the country without a permit might lead to disappointment if none are available. Also remember that tourists showing signs of illness or under the age of 15 will not be allowed to trek mountain gorillas.

Booking early not only secures your spot but also gives you time to coordinate the rest of your trip, from flights and accommodation to any additional activities you might want to combine with your gorilla trekking experience, making for a smoother and less stressful overall trip. A little advance planning goes a long way toward turning a bucket-list gorilla trek into a genuinely enjoyable, well organized experience from start to finish.
