In Akagera National Park, you will enjoy sightings of savanna wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, hyenas, Maasai giraffes, zebras, roan antelopes, birds, warthogs, hippos, and crocodiles. Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Primates & Wildlife Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Kigali City Tour
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by our company representative. After a short briefing, you will be transferred to your pre-booked hotel to check in and enjoy lunch.
In the afternoon, explore historical sites in Kigali, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the former presidential palace, and local markets such as Kimironko Market. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Drive to Akagera National Park
After breakfast at your hotel, meet your driver/guide and begin a 2.5-hour drive to Akagera National Park, located in Rwanda’s Eastern Province. This is Rwanda’s oldest park and the only savanna wilderness in the country, known for offering encounters with the Big Five.
Arrive early, check in at your lodge, and relax. After lunch, head out for an afternoon game drive. Expect to see wildlife such as impalas, lions, elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, roan antelopes, zebras, giraffes, and many bird species.
Day 3: Game Drive and Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema
Start the day with an early morning game drive through the park’s wildlife tracks. Look out for cape buffaloes, leopards, lions, giraffes, waterbucks, bushbucks, elephants, rhinos, warthogs, and birds. The game drive will last 2-3 hours.
After a lunch break at the lodge, enjoy a 2-3 hour boat safari on Lake Ihema. You will have the chance to see aquatic wildlife such as crocodiles and hippos, as well as water birds like African fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After breakfast, leave Akagera National Park and drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda’s Southern Province. This park is home to 13 primate species.
Along the way, stop at Butare to visit the King’s Palace and the Ethnographic Museum. After lunch, continue to your lodge near Nyungwe Forest, where you will relax and spend the night.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
Begin the day with breakfast, followed by a briefing at Uwinka reception about chimpanzee trekking rules. Nyungwe Forest is home to about 500 chimpanzees, along with 12 other primate species.
The trek lasts 2-4 hours, with one hour spent observing and photographing the chimpanzees. Return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, take part in a canopy walk experience, the only one of its kind in East Africa. Enjoy stunning views of the forest, and look out for primates, birds, and unique plants as you walk along the suspended bridge.
Day 6: Return to Kigali
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on a 6-hour drive back to Kigali. Once in Kigali, you can either check into a hotel or be dropped off at the airport for your departure flight. This marks the end of your 6-Day Rwanda Safari.
