5 Days Rwanda Gorillas Visit & Lake Kivu Leisure Safari

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is only done in Volcanoes national park in the Northern region of the country. Lake Kivu on the other hand is found in the western side of Rwanda. Volcanoes national park is 2 hours’ drive from the city center Kigali and this makes it one of the closest national parks in Rwanda. Volcanoes national park was established in 1925 mainly to protect the endangered species – mountain gorillas and other wildlife in this park.

Detailed safari

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to your hotel

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport Kanombe, our driver guide / representative will pick you, give you a briefing about the 5 days safari in Rwanda and later transfer you to the hotel where you will have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: City tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

In the morning after breakfast at around 8:00 am, you will have a city tour in Kigali where you will enjoy spectacular views of the rolling hills, visit genocide memorial site and then embark on a journey to Volcanoes National Park northwards. You will reach the hotel in afternoon hours, check-in and relax.

Day 3: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park

In the morning after your mouthwatering breakfast, put on your jungle boots, get packed lunch and go for briefing on how you are going to conduct yourself and how you should behave to maximize the encounter with these shy harmonious primates.

After briefing, you will be led by a ranger to the jungle where you will move up and down in the rugged terrain. In most cases, the exercise takes between 2-8 hours depending on the previous movements by mountain gorillas. If you are lucky, you can get them in a period of about 2 hours on a good day, if not on a lucky day it can take you about 4 hours and above but obviously you will land on them and they will entertain you so much especially the young ones that like playing on their mother’s shoulders and climbing branches making all sorts of fun.

While you are in the jungle, you will able to see a number of birds since the park harbors over 200 bird species, you will enjoy gorilla trekking as well as birds that will be swinging and singing in the tree branches. After this long day, retire from the hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Transfer to Lake Kivu. Boat cruise.

After your morning breakfast, transfer to Lake Kivu which is in the western part of the country. Reach in the afternoon hours, check-in your hotel, have lunch and there after you will go for launch cruise on Lake Kivu and visit Idjwi island which is the largest island in Rwanda forming the South Kivu Province in Democratic Republic of Congo.

After launch cruise, return to the hotel and relax at the beach. If you want to swim you can swim in the bilharzia free water. Have an overnight stay at any hotel on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali and departure

In the morning, wake up at around 8:00 am, have breakfast and check-out from the hotel for a transfer back to Kigali – the capital of Rwanda. Depending on your flight, if you have time, you can do a cultural tour around the Ibyiwacu Village in Musanze district you may have missed out.

Ibyiwacu is a Rwandan dialect that translates “Treasures of our Home”, this is also a suffix experience that will excite you through local dances, songs and stories. You can decide to buy some souvenirs and then embark on your journey back home.
