Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Primates Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park from Kigali with a Stopover at the Former Presidential Palace Museum
You will be picked up from an agreed point in Kigali and transferred to Nyungwe National Park, a famous park home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees.
On the way, stop at the former Presidential Palace Museum and learn about the death of President Habyarimana in a plane crash.
Upon arrival at Nyungwe, take in the beautiful surroundings. This will mark the end of the first day.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Start the day with a briefing at the park offices about the chimpanzee trekking adventure. The briefing will include tips on what to bring, such as proper trekking gear, drinking water, snacks, a rain jacket, a camera, and binoculars.
A park guide and porters will lead you into the forest to search for the chimpanzees. Spending an hour with a group of chimpanzees is a memorable experience.
You may also see other primates like colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and olive baboons.
In the afternoon, transfer to Volcanoes National Park, a historic park in Africa known for its mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
The park is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, plants, and reptiles. Check into your lodge upon arrival.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and Visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village
After breakfast, attend a briefing about golden monkey trekking. A park ranger will guide you through this experience, explaining the dos and don’ts. For example, avoid feeding the monkeys, don’t litter the park, and be cautious with flashlights since golden monkeys tend to come closer.
Begin the trek into the bamboo forests to search for the golden monkeys. Once located, spend an hour observing them before returning to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, also called the Gorilla Guardians Village. Experience Rwandan culture through music, dance, and drama.
Meet a traditional healer and learn about herbal medicines used to treat illnesses. Return to the lodge to end the day.
Day 4: Transfer Back to Kigali International Airport
Leave Volcanoes National Park in the morning and head back to Kigali, passing through the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. The journey takes 3-4 hours and includes a short city tour.
In Kigali, visit places like the Rwanda Genocide Memorial, local markets, and art galleries. This is also an opportunity to buy souvenirs to take home.
