Detailed 3-Day Karisimbi Volcano Hiking Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Optional Visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
You will be picked up from Kigali, Rwanda, and transferred to Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. This is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and is also the site of Dian Fossey’s grave. Dian Fossey was a female primatologist who dedicated her life to protecting and habituating mountain gorillas.
The journey to the park takes about 3 to 4 hours. Upon arrival, you have the option to visit the Gorilla Guardian Village, also called the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, for a cultural experience.
Day 2: Hike Mount Karisimbi
Start the day with breakfast, followed by a briefing by the park ranger guide at Kinigi. You will register and can rent any materials needed for the hike.
Begin the trek with fellow hikers, and carry a packed lunch. Along the way, you may spot primates such as vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, and even gorillas if you are lucky. You will also see various bird species. Spend the night camping in the mountains to add an adventurous touch to your experience.
Day 3: Hike to the Summit, Descend, and Transfer Back to Kigali
After breakfast, continue the hike to the summit, which takes about 4 hours depending on the group’s pace. At the summit, enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, including green forests, Mount Nyiragongo, Mount Nyamuragira—both active volcanoes—and the Virunga ranges in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
