Is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Safe? A Comprehensive Safety Guide

Visiting Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is very safe compared to most other national parks. This also applies if you are starting your trip from Kigali in Rwanda.

You will be accompanied by an armed game ranger during mountain gorilla trekking, and the forest is very safe to explore.

The main potential risk in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park comes during mountain gorilla trekking. Since gorillas are wild animals, you must be careful and follow the trekking rules and regulations to avoid any incidents. Not following the rules can lead to serious injuries or even death.

Although visiting Bwindi is safe, it is recommended to take precautions against malaria. This is a tropical forest where mosquitoes breed, especially during the rainy season. You can take antimalarial medication or carry a strong insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquito bites and other insect bites.

Most hotels within or near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park have security personnel to ensure the safety of their guests.

Tourism police are also stationed in different parts of the park to keep tourists safe while trekking gorillas, and they are always on standby in case of any issues.

Uganda has taken measures to make trekking mountain gorillas in Bwindi safe. Part of the money earned from gorilla trekking is used for conservation efforts and safety measures in the park.

While Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is safe to visit, tourists should take personal safety precautions and use a trusted tour company, preferably one registered with the Association of Uganda Tour Operators.
