Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park from Kigali

You will be welcomed by a professional driver guide who will give you a briefing about this 4-day Congo lowland gorilla and Nyungwe chimpanzee tour. After the briefing, begin your drive to Nyungwe National Park, which is home to 13 different primate species, including chimpanzees.

Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy an optional canopy walk. Later, check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and transfer to Bukavu / Kahuzi-Biega National Park

After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking. You will be guided on what to do and what to avoid while in the forest. Then begin your trek to find the chimpanzees. When you find them, you will spend one hour watching them as they jump through trees, search for food, feed, and make sounds. The full trek usually takes 2 to 5 hours.

During the trek, you may also see other wildlife such as vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, red colobus monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

After the experience, return to the park office for debriefing and have lunch. Then continue your journey to Bukavu Town or Kahuzi-Biega National Park, crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo. On arrival, check in at the lodge for rest.

Day 3: Lowland gorilla trekking

After breakfast, drive to the park headquarters of Kahuzi-Biega National Park for a briefing. You will learn the important rules for trekking such as not feeding the animals, not littering, keeping a distance of about 10 meters from the gorillas, and not using a flash while taking photos.

The trek will begin under the guidance of an armed park ranger. Once the gorillas are found, you will spend one hour observing them. The full activity may take 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorillas are located.

You will take photos and enjoy watching the largest gorillas in the world as they move, eat, and care for their young. After the trek, return to the lodge to relax and share your experiences.

Day 4: Transfer back to Kigali and fly home

After breakfast at the lodge, you will be driven back to Kigali. You will be dropped off at the airport for your flight, marking the end of the tour.
