1 & 2-Day Treks in Rwenzori – A Nature Escape

This two-day trek on Mount Rwenzori is a relatively easy walk as you climb steadily through montane forest, with tall trees, thick undergrowth, and a multitude of different species of birds and primates.

The forests are untouched and carry a wide variety of trees and plants.

The first few kilometers climb steadily, crossing several small streams and rivers, then branch off on the birding trail.

Within a few hundred meters from the turnoff, you will see evidence of bush pigs digging for roots and grubs in the undergrowth and along the path.

6-Day Hunwick's Camp Trek - Mount Rwenzori's Wonder

Day 1: Base Camp to Sine Camp/Kalalama Camp

You start by walking up the valley floor through tall forest trees of the Afro Montane Forest Zone.

This is a steady climb for the first six kilometers.

After crossing a river, it is a steep climb up to Sine Camp.

The forest trees are tall, with multitudes of birds and a chance of seeing blue monkeys scampering off through the forest.

Enock’s Falls are just 200 meters from Sine Hut and offer a splendid opportunity to capture a great screensaver for your memories.

Brightly clouded green lichen grows on the many vines hanging from the trees with the waterfall as a background.

At Sine Camp (2,596 meters), we have wooden huts set between tall forest trees on a narrow ridge where you may sit and enjoy the beauty of the forest while looking down at a long set of rapids and waterfalls crashing over the rocks.

Some clients prefer to sit outside, enjoying the warmth of the campfire, and chat with the guides about the mountains and life in their community.

Sine is just below the bamboo zone, and the area around has many different bird species.

150 meters from the camp is Enock Falls, set in vivid green vegetation and hanging vines. Truly beautiful.

You can sleep at Sine Camp, or those who are fit and want to proceed to Kalalama Camp at 3,134 meters may do so and enjoy the fantastic views.

Day 2: Transfer to Base Camp

After a good breakfast, and depending on which camp you slept in, your day’s activities will vary.

If you slept in Kalalama Camp, you will hear the calls of the Rwenzori Turaco, which loves living and nesting in the Giant Heathers that are abundant here.

You may choose to search out the Turaco to get good photos or decide to climb a little farther to see the mosses growing on the ground, logs, and trees before returning down to just above Sine Camp.

From there, you take the trail on the left slope down to Enock Falls, which is truly beautiful, and walk down through some incredibly beautiful forest.

The forest walk is a steady descent through pristine forest with a multitude of birds.

There are several patches of bamboo, while in other areas, the trees are laced with hundreds of vines hanging between trees that have bright green lichen on them.

This section of the forest is spectacular, and just before you get to Sine Camp, you walk across a stream immediately below a beautiful waterfall.

At Sine Camp, you can sit on the verandah and look down at a stunning set of rapids cascading down the valley.

Or if you had decided to sleep in Sine Camp, you may decide to walk straight down the forest path, or you may climb up to Kalalama Camp to experience the views before passing back down to the park entrance and the hostel.

In these two days, you will have experienced an unforgettable and interesting tour adventure that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
