Detailed 10-Day Uganda Bird Watching Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, our representative will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.
Depending on your arrival time, you may even have the chance to do some birding around Entebbe, particularly in areas like the Botanical Gardens, where you can expect to see a variety of bird species.
Some of the species you may spot include Great Blue and Ross’s Turacos, Red-Chested, Lizard Buzzard, Greater Swamp and Eurasian Reed Warblers, Fan-Tailed Widowbird, Striped, Malachite, Giant, Woodland, and Pygmy Kingfishers, Black Bishop, Klaas’s and Diederick Cuckoo, Great Reed, Grey-Capped, Olive, Olive-Bellied, Red-Chested, Superb, Green-Throated, and Collared Sunbirds, as well as Orange, Yellow-Backed, Golden-Backed, Slender-Billed, and Black-Headed Weavers. Other notable sightings might include Grey Woodpecker, Grey Kestrel, Black Kite, Gaber Goshawk, African Paradise, Red-Bellied Paradise, and Ashy Flycatchers.
Day 2: Birding at Mabamba Swamp
Mabamba Swamp is renowned for the Shoebill stork, but it’s also home to numerous other bird species, such as the Long-Tailed Cormorant, Squacco Heron, Yellow-Billed Duck, Blue-Breasted Bee-Eater, African Open-Billed Stork, Grey Kestrel, African Green Pigeon, Great Blue, and Ross’s Turaco. In the mid-morning, we’ll drive to Lake Mburo National Park.
Day 3: Birding at Lake Mburo
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a game drive around the park and Lake Mburo.
Some of the species we hope to spot include African Marsh Harriers, Banded Snake Eagles, Shikra, Steppe, and African Hawk Eagles, Papyrus Gonolek, African Fish Eagle, African Fish, Tawny, Malachite Kingfishers, Goshawks, Augur Buzzard, African Finfoot, Giant Kingfisher, White-Backed Night Heron, Little Bittern, Black-Crowned Night, and Green-Backed Herons, African Open-Billed Stork, African Finfoot, and Giant Kingfisher, Brown-Chested Plover, Red-Faced Barbet, Madagascar, and Common Squacco Heron.
Day 4: Birding to Ruhija
Today, our birding focus will be on species like Mountain and Augur Buzzards, Ayres’s Hawk-Eagle, Rufous-Chested Sparrowhawk, Rameron Pigeon, Brown-Necked Parrot, Black-Billed Turaco, Barred Long-Tailed Cuckoo, Gray Cuckoo-Shrike, Western Green Tinkerbird, Ruwenzori, and Chestnut-Throated Apalises, Red-Faced Woodland-Warbler, White-Tailed Blue-Flycatcher, White-Headed Woodhoopoe, Red-Tailed, Shelley’s, and Yellow-Streaked Greenbuls, Olive Thrush, White-Starred Robin, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Mountain, Gray-Chested Illadopses, Eastern Mountain, Purple-Breasted Sunbird, as well as Blue-Headed and Regal Sunbirds, Yellow-Eyed Black-Flycatcher, Ruwenzori Batis, Mountain Sooty Boubou, Olive Woodpecker, Thick-Billed, African Hill Babbler, Black-Faced, Honeyguide, the rare Lagden’s Bushshrike, Sharpe’s Starling, Black-Tailed Oriole, Strange Weaver, and Oriole Finch, Least, and the elusive Dwarf Honeyguides, Black Sawwing, Red-Faced, and Shelley’s Crimsonwings.
Day 5: Birding in Ruhija
We’ll be leaving the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and heading to the Buhoma sector today.
Our species list for the day may include the Black Bee-Eater, the Red-Throated Wryneck, White-Starred Robin, Olive Thrush, Chestnut-Throated, and Grey Apalis, Stripe-Breasted Tit, Sharpe’s Starling, the elusive Regal and Purple-Breasted Sunbird, Mountain Wagtail, and Cassin’s Grey Flycatcher, Mountain Masked, Strange Weaver, Red-Faced Woodland Warbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Mackinnon’s Shrike, Collared, and Dusky Twinspot.
Day 6: Optional Gorilla Trekking
Today, you have the option of going gorilla trekking.
While searching for gorillas, you may also have the opportunity to spot other bird species.
In the afternoon, you can continue birding to further explore the area.
Day 7: Birding to Queen Elizabeth National Park
We’ll head to the Kasenyi area of Queen Elizabeth National Park, embarking on a game drive with hopes of finding the Verreaux’s Eagle Owl.
Other species expected for the day include the Brown Short-Toed and Bateleur Eagles, African Harrier Hawk, Martial, and Tawny Eagle, Lizard Buzzard, Grey Kestrel, Crowned, Senegal, and African Wattled Plovers, Harlequin Quail, Brown Snake Eagle, and Common Buttonquail. In the afternoon, we’ll enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, searching for species such as the Great White and Pink-Backed Pelicans, African Jacana, Lesser Flamingo, African Fish Eagle, Common Squacco Heron, African Open-Billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Grey-Headed, Malachite, and Pied Kingfisher.
Day 8: Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park
We’ll begin with an early morning breakfast before driving to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
With approximately 612 recorded bird species, it boasts the highest bird count among Africa’s national parks.
The park’s diverse vegetation types contribute to its rich avian diversity.
We’ll check into Mweya Safari Lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Later, we’ll transfer to Fort Portal for dinner and another overnight stay.
Day 9: Birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Today, we’ll have another opportunity for birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
With its abundance of bird species and varied habitats, this park provides an excellent birding experience.
Day 10: Transfer to Entebbe & End of Trip
We’ll drive back to Entebbe for our return flight home.
