Best Place to See Mountain Gorillas in Africa in 2023/2024

Mountain gorillas are an endangered species of primates and the largest living primates in the world living in the tropical and sub tropical forests in Africa, there are only less than 1000 mountain gorillas left in the world. Mountain gorillas live in social groups of 5-30 individuals in a group being led by a dominant Silverbacks that takes care of all the group’s activities like feeding, movements and also responsible for the groups safety.

Bwindi impenetrable national park is found in the south western part in Uganda. It is the best place to see mountain gorillas in Africa and the world at large. The park is home to half of the world’s mountain gorillas and there are 15 habituated groups at the moment. Bwindi is also the only park that offers gorilla habituation experience in Africa. Bwindi impenetrable forest national park offers gorilla trekking permits at $600 per person and he gorilla habituation permits cost $1500.

2. Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

Volcanoes national park is found in the north eastern part of Rwanda bordering Uganda and the Democratic republic of Congo. The park is home to 10 habituated gorilla families that can be trekked all year round. Volcanoes national park offers the most expensive gorilla trekking with permits costing $1500 per person per trek.

3. Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park

Virunga national park is located in the democratic republic of Congo that is one of the countries where mountain gorillas can be trekked from. Virunga has got 6 mountain gorillas families that have been habituated for gorilla trekking; you can also visit the Senkwekwe gorilla orphanage. The democratic republic of Congo also offers the cheapest gorilla permits with each costing $400 per person.
In conclusion Uganda and Rwanda are the best places for seeing mountain gorillas in Africa, when planning to trek from Congo you should first check the security condition of the country.

4. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also found in Uganda at the extreme southern part of the country bordering Democratic republic of Congo and Rwanda. There is only one habituated gorilla family in the park known as Nyakagezi gorilla family. The park is also home to the endangered species of golden monkeys. The cost of trekking gorillas in Mgahinga national park is the same as in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park.
