Gorilla trekking has become the most expensive tourist activity in Africa, yet it is also one of the most popular.
A gorilla permit, a card issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the Rwanda Development Board, or Virunga National Park is required prior to the actual gorilla trekking experience.
Below is a guide on where you can purchase these gorilla permits.
Where to Buy Gorilla Permits In Uganda
Uganda gorilla permits cost $800 per person, and gorilla habituation permits cost $1,500 per person. These can be bought directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a trusted tour operator.
It is advised to buy gorilla permits 3 to 6 months in advance, especially during the peak season. Permits in Uganda are in high demand because Rwanda raised its prices and Congo can sometimes be unsafe to visit. This has made Uganda a popular option for travelers looking for an authentic experience.
Where to Buy Gorilla Permits In Rwanda
Rwanda offers a more luxurious gorilla trekking experience, with permits costing $1,500 per person. These should also be booked in advance, especially during peak seasons.
Rwanda gorilla permits can be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board or through a trusted travel company.
Where to Buy Gorilla Permits In the Democratic Republic of Congo
Congo gorilla permits are the cheapest permits in Africa. It costs $400 per person. However, travelers who want to trek gorillas in Congo should always check the security situation before planning their trip.
The best time to see mountain gorillas is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February. During the rainy seasons from March to May and October to November, the roads to the parks can become impassable, and the trekking trails can be muddy and slippery, making trekking difficult.
When going for gorilla trekking, you should carry waterproof hiking boots, garden gloves, sunscreen, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, insect repellent, energy-giving snacks, a hiking stick, plenty of drinking water, and more.
There are also porters available at each national park headquarters to help carry your luggage at an affordable price.
