Guide to Rwanda’s Land Border Posts & Locations

The safest official land border posts for tourists entering Rwanda from Uganda are mainly Gatuna, Buziba, Rwempasha, Cyanika, Kagitumba, and Buhita.

Border posts play an important role in protecting a country and controlling immigration. Rwanda shares borders with Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwanda’s border with Uganda stretches about 169 kilometers, while its border with the DRC spans 217 kilometers. Tanzania also shares a 217-kilometer border with Rwanda.

Burundi has the longest shared border with Rwanda, measuring about 290 kilometers.

Geographically, Tanzania is to the east, Uganda to the north, the DRC to the west, and Burundi to the south. Although small, Rwanda is one of Africa’s most popular travel destinations.

Rwanda has an excellent reputation in Africa. Despite the tragic 1994 genocide, the country has quickly created a safe environment, allowing tourism to grow and become the largest source of revenue.

The country offers numerous attractions, including physical features, wildlife, a favorable climate, and historical sites.

Rwanda’s Official Land Border Posts

Rwanda's Official Land Border Posts

Rwanda has 19 official land border points. Some of the key ones with Uganda include Buziba, Buhita, Kagitumba, Cyanika, and Gatuna. With Tanzania, there is the Rusumo border post.

With Burundi, key border posts include Bweyeye, Ruhwa, Rusizi, and Nemba. With the DRC, there are Rusizi, Bugarama, Goma, and Kabuhanga.

However, not all these border posts are commonly used by tourists. Factors such as long travel distances, poor transport routes, or general security concerns make some border posts less convenient.

The safest and most commonly used land border posts for tourists entering Rwanda from Uganda are Gatuna, Buziba, Rwempasha, Cyanika, Kagitumba, and Buhita.

Key Border Posts in Rwanda

  • Gatuna Border Post: Also known as Katuna on the Ugandan side, the Gatuna Border Post is famous for its heavy commercial traffic. It is a one-stop border located in Kabale District in Uganda’s southwest and Gicumbi District on the Rwandan side. Gatuna is about 7-8 hours from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and only 4 hours from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.
  • Cyanika Border Post: Located in Kisoro District on the Ugandan side and Burera District on the Rwandan side, Cyanika Border Post is the busiest border for tourism between the two countries. Its location near an airfield in Uganda makes it convenient for tourists traveling by air from Entebbe. On the Ugandan side, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are nearby. On the Rwandan side, the twin lakes and Musanze District, home to Volcanoes National Park, are easily accessible for gorilla trekking adventures.
  • Kagitumba Border Post: Located in the Mirama Hills in Ntungamo District, Uganda, the Kagitumba Border Post connects Uganda to Rwanda. Plans are underway to upgrade it into a one-stop border post to reduce waiting times, especially for trucks and cross-border travelers. It offers a shorter route into Rwanda compared to Gatuna and Cyanika.
  • Buhita Border Post: The Buhita Border Post is in Rwanda’s Burera District. It is still developing and is part of recent efforts to improve cross-border relations between Rwanda and Uganda. Buhita is another option for tourists traveling between the two countries.
  • Buziba & Rwempasha Border Posts: The Buziba & Rwempasha Border Posts are in Nyagatare District, Rwanda, and border Kabale District in Uganda. Both areas are known for their lush tropical vegetation and cool climate. They provide alternative entry and exit points for tourists.

Tourist Experiences Along the Borders

While traveling through these border regions, tourists can enjoy beautiful landscapes and cultural experiences. The route to Kabale offers beautiful scenery and a glimpse into the lives of locals.

Rwanda’s border posts are safe and welcoming, making travel between Rwanda and its neighboring countries an enjoyable experience.
