Ugyenda Gorilla Group – Exploring Rwanda’s Mobile Mountain Gorillas

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park offers the most luxurious gorilla trekking, with permits being more expensive compared to Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mountain gorillas cannot survive in zoos, which is why you need to travel to Africa to have an encounter with these close relatives of humans.

There are about 10 habituated mountain gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park that tourists can visit, and eight gorilla permits are allocated to each group daily. Mountain gorillas go through a habituation process lasting about 2-3 years before they can be visited by tourists.

Mountain gorillas are giant and gentle animals, but they can become very aggressive when they feel insecure. This is why you need to carefully follow the gorilla trekking rules and regulations while in their presence.

Ugyenda Mountain Gorilla Family

Ugyenda Mountain Gorilla Family

The Ugyenda mountain gorilla family consists of 11 members, including one silverback. However, it is important to note that the number of members in gorilla families changes due to various reasons, such as members moving to other groups, deaths, or new births.

The word “Ugyenda” comes from a local Kinyarwanda word meaning “mobile.” The group was given this name because they are always on the move and do not stay in one place for long, making trekking this family challenging at times.

The Ugyenda gorilla family can be trekked on the slopes of Mount Bisoke. Hiking to find this family is not very difficult unless they are actively moving.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 per person per trek. Only healthy people above the age of 15 are allowed to trek mountain gorillas. Once the gorilla family is found, you are given one hour to observe the gorillas and take photos.

Gorilla permits should be booked 3-6 months in advance due to high demand, especially during the peak season.

Best Time to Visit Ugyenda Gorilla Family

Rwanda is a year-round destination because the vegetation in Volcanoes National Park is mostly bamboo, which is not very dense even during the wet season, allowing clear views of mountain gorillas.

However, the best time to visit is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February, when the trekking trails are not muddy or slippery.

What to Bring

Keep in mind that the weather in rainforests can be unpredictable, so come prepared with hiking gear. Essential items include waterproof hiking boots, warm and long-sleeved clothing, plenty of drinking water, energy snacks, garden gloves, raincoats, and jackets.

Volcanoes National Park is also home to four of the Virunga Range volcanoes. You can hike to the top of any of these volcanoes for stunning views and the chance to see a variety of wildlife and bird species.
