Murugo Cultural Centre: Kigali’s Cultural Oasis

Murugo Cultural Centre is proof that Rwanda’s appeal goes far beyond its hills and mountain gorillas. The country’s unique culture is a big part of what draws travelers here, and it is well worth exploring on its own.

Also known as a cultural oasis in Kigali, this center offers first class insight into the traditions, culture, and beliefs of Rwanda. It has been standing for many years, and while its exact founding years aren’t widely documented, it holds its place as the oldest cultural center in Rwanda, offering visitors a genuinely relaxing experience.

Uniqueness of Murugo Cultural Centre

One of the most notable things about this cultural center is that it provides accommodation to its visitors. A well furnished room with four bedrooms is available on the premises, giving at least 4 guests the chance to rest and relax after a long day of city touring or gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

Children aged two years and below are not permitted on the premises, so parents should plan accordingly before visiting, to avoid disappointment.

Pets, much like young children, are also not allowed on the grounds of this cultural center. Smoking is prohibited on the premises as well.

Tourist Activities at Murugo Cultural Center

Below are some of the tourist activities available at Murugo Cultural Center.

Cultural dances and performances: Watching talented Rwandans move in rhythm, dressed in traditional attire, is an exciting sight, and visitors are often prompted to join in the dancing themselves.

Cultural drumming: The sound of the drums carries ancient melodies that transport visitors to earlier times. Drumming styles vary depending on the occasion, whether for marriage ceremonies, hunting, harvesting, or other events, and each style offers a distinct kind of joy to visitors.

Exploring traditional tools: Like other historical centers, this one exhibits traditional tools such as animal hides, hunting sticks, drums, and weapons like arrows, bows, and spears. These draw the interest of many tourists eager to learn the history behind these tools and how they were used.

Art paintings and sculptures: Viewing the artistic paintings on display is an engaging activity, as each piece portrays a specific traditional theme, inviting visitors to interpret the artist’s intent. Paintings depicting scenes such as women winnowing grain or cooking are among the highlights. The gallery also features sculptures of traditional tools like drums, as well as sculptures of animals such as lions, elephants, and buffaloes.

When to Visit Murugo Cultural Centre

Tourists are welcomed to this land of a thousand hills throughout the year, though it’s worth noting that itineraries that include gorilla trekking are best planned for the dry seasons.

Cultural centers are also closed on public holidays, such as the day of remembrance for the genocide, Independence Day, and Umuganda day.

Location of Murugo Cultural Center

This popular cultural collection is found in the capital, Kigali, just five kilometers from the city center. It sits close to Rwarutabura to the southeast and Mugatenga to the southwest, barely 2.5km from the presidential palace museum, making it an easy stop for visitors keen to explore the culture of indigenous Rwandans.
