Buhita Border Post is located near Burera District in the Northern Province of Rwanda. It is about 24 kilometers from Mount Muhabura and approximately 60 kilometers from Kigali.

This border post is in Buhita town, one of the most populated towns in Rwanda’s Northern region.

Buhita is situated at an altitude of 1,792 meters and is close to Kimiryi and Magezi. Nearby is the Ruhengeri airstrip, 27 kilometers to the west.

Additionally, several UNESCO World Heritage Sites are within its proximity, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, 63 kilometers to the north, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is a key destination located in Rwanda’s Northern Province, near the Buhita Border Post. It is a must-visit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and is part of the extensive Virunga Conservation Area (VCA).

From Kigali, the park is a 2-3 hour drive and offers plenty of attractions, including mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, birds, five towering volcanoes, reptiles, floral species, beautiful scenery, caves, and more.

Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s smallest parks, covering about 160 square kilometers. Gazetted in 1925, it is popular for activities such as gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, bird watching (especially Albertine Rift endemic species like the Kivu ground thrush), volcano hiking, nature walks, Dian Fossey tomb hikes, and cave exploration.

Mount Muhabura

Mount Muhabura, also known as Mount Muhavura, is part of the Virunga Massifs, a chain of volcanoes located at the border of Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo. Standing at an altitude of 4,127 meters, it is the third-highest volcano among the eight Virunga Massifs.

These volcanoes are part of the Albertine Rift, which is a section of the East African Rift. At the summit of Mount Muhabura, there is a small Crater Lake. The mountain spans Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.

Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke, also called Visoke, is a popular hiking destination near Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s Northern Province. Shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this active volcano is part of the Virunga Massifs. Hiking Mount Bisoke typically takes about six hours, including two hours to descend.

With an altitude of 3,711 meters, the summit features a Crater Lake with a diameter of 450 meters. Two days or more are recommended for a complete hiking experience on Mount Bisoke.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is a newly established protected area in Rwanda. It was created by merging Gishwati and Mukura forests, covering a total area of 34 square kilometers.

Located in the western part of Rwanda, Gishwati Forest is home to most Albertine Rift species, including 60 tree species, 20 chimpanzees, blue monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and 232 bird species.

Key activities in Gishwati-Mukura National Park include bird watching, chimpanzee trekking, golden monkey tracking, and nature walks. The park is a haven for biodiversity and offers a unique experience for nature lovers.
