Amahoro mountain gorilla family is composed of 17 individuals of 1 silverback, 5 adult females, 2 sub adult males, 2 black backs, 2 juveniles and 5 babies. Amahoro derives its name from the local Kinyarwanda word to mean “peace”.
The name of the group is portrayed by its dominating silverback Ubumwe known to be very calm and peaceful this even led him to loosing some group members to Charles the silverback of Umubano gorilla family. The name of the dominating silverback means “togetherness” in the local language.
Amahoro mountain gorilla family can be trekked from the slopes of mount Bisoke. Most travellers love to visit this family because of their peaceful characters showed towards humans and even other mountain gorillas.
Amahoro gorilla family is just one of the habituated gorilla families there are also other families that can be trekked in the park. It should be noted that mountain gorillas numbers keep on changing depending on deaths, births and transfers to other groups.
If you’re a calm and peaceful person, then Amahoro gorilla family is the group to trek while in volcanoes national park though group allocation sometimes depends on age and physical fitness. Old people will always be allocated to the nearest gorilla family while young energetic travellers trek families inhabiting high elevations.
Gorilla trekking permits
Rwanda offers the most luxurious gorilla trekking experience with permits costing $1500 per person per trekking. Gorilla permits can be got from Rwanda Development Board or through a trusted travel company, permits are always scarce especially in the peak season.
Best time to visit
Rwanda is an all year round destination though some months are better than the other months, the best time for visiting is in the dry season of June to September and December to February when the trekking trails are in good condition and the weather favorable.
What to bring
Mountain gorillas live on higher elevations of rain forests that will require hiking and physical fitness. You must be prepared and cone along with water proof hiking boots, garden gloves, plenty of drinking water, energy snacks, insect repellents and so much more.
