Lake Muhazi – Rwanda’s Retreat for Fishing, Birding & Boating

Lake Muhazi is one of the freshwater lakes and most beautiful places to visit in Rwanda. It is located east of Kigali City and is surrounded by a quiet neighborhood, making it a relaxing escape from the busy city and noise.

Lake Muhazi is a shallow but long lake that stretches about 40 kilometers to the eastern shore, near Akagera National Park.

The lake extends through a flooded valley, and its waters flow into the Nyabugogo River, which heads south towards Kigali City and meets the Nyabarongo River.

The lake has a concrete dam that replaced an earlier earth dam in 1999.

The eastern shores of the lake are close to the road leading to Nyagatare and provide a great spot to rest, have lunch, or enjoy the cool breeze.

The shallow nature of the lake makes it possible to swim along the shores, though with caution. This hidden treasure is one of Rwanda’s top tourist attractions and is a must-visit while in the country.

Lake Muhazi - Rwanda's Retreat for Fishing, Birding & Boating

The lake is near two large towns, Gahini and Rwesero, which have several accommodation options like guest houses.

These places can help you arrange activities such as fishing, bird-watching, boat trips, and other exciting adventures.

If you visit the area on a Sunday, you may see locals attending church service at Gahini Anglican Cathedral.

This historical place of worship was built in 1975 and continues to attract many worshippers and pilgrims each year. You can even join the service if you wish.

Activities to Do Along Lake Muhazi

  • Sport Fishing: The freshwater lake supports the breeding of different fish species such as Nile tilapia, marbled lungfish, and blue-spotted tilapia. During fishing, you can keep the fish you catch. This activity is relaxing and enjoyed by many tourists.
  • Bird Watching: Water birds, such as African fish eagles, common waxbills, and yellow-throated greenbuls, can be seen hunting for fish around the lake. Other birds like speckled pigeons, chin-spot batis, cardinal woodpeckers, and cattle egrets are also commonly sighted. The lake is a perfect spot for bird lovers.
  • Boat Rides: Enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the lake at any time of day. While on the boat, you can take in the cool breeze and watch the birds. You might also see fishermen at work. Morning rides offer beautiful sunrises, and evening rides provide stunning views of the sunset.
  • Cultural Visits: There are several towns near the lake, such as Gahini, which is known as the most religious town in Rwanda. It was where the first missionaries settled and built schools, churches, and hospitals. Visit this town to explore the architecture created by the early missionaries. Many of these structures, like Gahini Hospital and the Anglican Cathedral, are still in use today.
  • Camping: Camping is available at various spots along the lake shores. You can bring your own camping gear to save money or rent equipment from your hotel for a fee. Some hotels, like Rwesero Beach, are located by the lake and offer camping services. It is advisable to book in advance, as camping is a popular activity at the lake.

How to Access Lake Muhazi

Lake Muhazi can be accessed via the Kigali-Kayonza Road, about a 40-minute drive from Kigali City. To reach the eastern side of the lake, use Kagitumba Road. For the southern side, follow Kayonza Road.
