Lake Muhazi: A Hidden Gem Near Kigali

Lake Muhazi is one of the freshwater lakes and most appealing places to visit in Rwanda. It is located east of Kigali City and surrounded by a quiet neighborhood, making it a relaxing escape from the busier pace of the capital.

Lake Muhazi is a shallow but long lake, stretching about 40 kilometers to its eastern shore, near Akagera National Park.

The lake extends through a flooded valley, and its waters flow into the Nyabugogo River, which heads south towards Kigali City and joins the Nyabarongo River.

The lake has a concrete dam, which replaced an earlier earth dam in 1999.

The eastern shores of the lake sit close to the road leading to Nyagatare, offering a good spot to rest, have lunch, or enjoy the cool breeze.

The shallow nature of the lake makes it possible to swim along the shores, with caution. This hidden gem is one of Rwanda’s top tourist attractions and is worth a visit while in the country.

Nearby Towns and Accommodation

The lake is near two towns, Gahini and Rwesero, which offer several accommodation options, including guest houses.

These places can help arrange activities such as fishing, bird watching, boat trips, and other outings.

If you visit on a Sunday, you may see locals attending church service at Gahini Anglican Cathedral.

This historic place of worship was built in 1975 and continues to draw worshippers and pilgrims each year. Visitors are welcome to join the service if they wish.

Activities to Do Along Lake Muhazi

Sport Fishing: The freshwater lake supports different fish species, such as Nile tilapia, marbled lungfish, and blue-spotted tilapia. Anglers can keep the fish they catch. This activity is relaxing and popular among tourists.

Bird Watching: Water birds, such as African fish eagles, common waxbills, and yellow-throated greenbuls, can be seen hunting for fish around the lake. Other birds like speckled pigeons, chinspot batis, cardinal woodpeckers, and cattle egrets are also commonly spotted. The lake is a great destination for bird lovers.

Boat Rides: Enjoy a peaceful boat ride on the lake at any time of day. While on the boat, you can take in the breeze and watch the birds, and you might also see fishermen at work. Morning rides offer wide sunrise views, while evening rides bring striking sunsets over the water.

Cultural Visits: Several towns sit near the lake, including Gahini, known as one of the most religious towns in Rwanda. It was where the first missionaries settled and built schools, churches, and hospitals. Visit this town to explore the architecture left behind by the early missionaries. Many of these structures, like Gahini Hospital and the Anglican Cathedral, remain in use today.

Camping: Camping is available at various spots along the lake shores. You can bring your own camping gear to save money, or rent equipment from your hotel for a fee. Some hotels, like Rwesero Beach, are located right by the lake and offer camping services. It’s advisable to book in advance, as camping is a popular activity here.

How to Access Lake Muhazi

Lake Muhazi can be reached via the Kigali-Kayonza Road, about a 40 minute drive from Kigali City. To reach the eastern side of the lake, use Kagitumba Road. For the southern side, follow Kayonza Road.
