Kigali Center for Photography – Showcasing Rwanda’s Visual Storytelling & Artistic Talent

Photo tours are a rare tourist activity in Central and East Africa, and perhaps in many other parts of the world. Interestingly, Rwanda offers this unique tourism activity, and most tourists find it both exciting and memorable.

The Kigali Center for Photography is located in Kimihurura, on KG 676 Street in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. Visitors who have some free time while in Kigali are encouraged to book a short tour at this photography center.

The photographs displayed at the center provide a visual understanding of Rwanda’s culture, people, and attractions. These images may include places that tourists might not have visited during their trip.

Some visitors even decide to add these photographed attractions to their tour plans after seeing them at the center. Overall, the Kigali Center for Photography provides a space to appreciate and enjoy photography.

Kigali Center for Photography - Showcasing Rwanda's Visual Storytelling & Artistic Talent

The Kigali Center for Photography was established in December 2007. Its main goal is to serve as a historical photography center in Rwanda.

It focuses on promoting both local and international photography while supporting photographers, whether they are beginners or experienced.

The center was inspired by Jacques Nkinzingabo, a Rwandan documentary photographer, and aims to encourage more talent in photography and transform the field in Rwanda.

The center offers free services to resident photographers, which is rare compared to similar centers around the world. It is also the first photography center of its kind in East and Central Africa.

The center conducts exhibitions to showcase members’ photographic work, helping them gain wider attention.

It also organizes workshops and symposiums to inspire new photographers and provide them with the skills and experience they need to succeed in the profession.

The center is dedicated to building the skills of local photographers. It provides free studio space for local photographers to work on their projects and offers grants to some artists and photographers with ongoing projects.

It also collaborates on partnership projects with these photographers. For visiting international photographers, the center offers residency opportunities, which help motivate and support their professional growth.

Additionally, it facilitates training programs for experienced photographers and students.

Activities at the Kigali Center for Photography

  • Photo Tours: These tours take about 2-3 hours and focus on the photography displayed at the center.
  • Exhibitions: Visitors can attend exhibitions showcasing the work of photographers.
  • Workshops: Tourists can participate in free workshops offered at the center.
  • Storytelling Sessions: Guided tours include storytelling sessions where established photographers share their inspirations and experiences.

When to Visit?

The center is open every day of the week, starting at 9:00 am. However, tourists are encouraged to visit from Monday to Friday, as Saturdays and Sundays often have activities reserved for the center’s members, which might limit visitor access.
