Cyanika Border: Uganda-Rwanda Crossing Guide

The Cyanika border is a connecting point between Uganda and Rwanda, located in the southwestern part of Uganda and the northeastern part of Rwanda.

The Cyanika border is approximately a one hour drive from Volcanoes National Park and a 30 minute drive from Mgahinga National Park.

If you’re mapping out a Uganda-Rwanda trip, this is a good place to start planning in Uganda.

The Cyanika settlement, also known as Kyanika, is situated on the Ugandan side and is only about 10 kilometers from Kisoro Town, a popular tourist destination in Uganda.

There are plans for the Cyanika border to be rebuilt by Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure.

The Cyanika border is one of the easier borders to cross without much hassle. However, you will need a passport, visa, and yellow fever vaccination card to cross.

This border is significant to both countries, as it connects two key tourist areas. It is especially useful for tourists who wish to undertake gorilla trekking starting from Kigali.

Places of Interest Near Cyanika

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park is the most popular and frequently visited tourist destination in Rwanda. Thousands of visitors come to the park annually to trek endangered mountain gorillas or attend the gorilla naming ceremony. Only eight people are allowed to visit a specific gorilla family per day, and visitors are given an hour of observation once the gorillas are located. Volcanoes National Park is also home to five of the Virunga volcanoes: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Bisoke. Tourists can enjoy mountain climbing either before or after gorilla trekking. Permits for Rwanda cost $1,500 per person.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in southern Uganda, bordering Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. The park is home to mountain gorillas and three of the Virunga Massif volcanoes: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. Mount Sabyinyo offers wide views of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda from its peak. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park costs $800 per person, and children under 15 are not permitted to trek mountain gorillas. The park also offers golden monkey trekking.

Lake Mutanda: Located near the Cyanika border in Kisoro District, Uganda, Lake Mutanda is an ideal place to relax after a demanding gorilla trekking experience. Visitors can explore some of the lake’s 15 islands using a traditional dugout canoe, much like local fishermen, while taking in wide views of the Virunga Volcanic Mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo. Tourists can also take part in cultural encounters on the islands or around the lake.

How to Get to the Cyanika Border

The Cyanika border can be reached within a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, or within a 9 to 10 hour drive from Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

The nearest airstrip is Kisoro Airstrip on the Ugandan side, offering daily scheduled flights to Entebbe International Airport.
