2 DAYS VISIT TO SASSA CAVES AND KWANZA SUL.
Kwanda Sul is one of Angola’s provinces, located in the south of the country, close to Luanda and bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It has a tropical climate and the months of July and August are the best times to visit. Kwanda Sul has been a part of Angola since colonial times and is renowned for its beautiful beaches. The province is also known for its mountains, which are home to many cave paintings from the Neolithic era, ruins of ancient fortifications, and numerous caves.
Although the Sassa Caves are perhaps the most well-known in the area, they were nominated as one of the 7 Wonders of Angola. In addition to the Sassa caves, the area is also known for its beaches, waterfalls, thermal springs, and dunes.
The Sassa caves are one of the most famous in Angola, but the Sassa dunes (Barragem da Sassa), waterfalls, and thermal springs are also well-known for their stunning views of the water. Other attractions include the Praca dos Namorados, waterfalls and hot springs, as well as the Grutas de Maria Bonita, which overlooks the water.
Day 1
We will leave Luanda at around 6:00 in the morning and make our way south, passing by the Miradouro do Lua lookout point on the way. Along the way, we will cross the Kwanza river and pass through the Kissama National Park. We will then pass through the Rio Longa which marks the boundary of QuiƧama with Kwanza Sul.
We’ll take a break in porto amboim before heading to the Cubal Caves on the River Cubal. From here, we’ll head to Sassa to explore the caves.
The 30-minute trek to the Caves of Sassa passes through nearly uninhabited savannah. After the hike, we’ll take a car ride to our accommodation at Sumbe, where we’ll spend the night.
Day 2
After breakfast, we make our way to the small waterfalls of the confluence of the river Angoeira, surrounded by picturesque landscapes of the Angola Scarp savannah and woodlands, each with its own flora and fauna. This beautiful and isolated site is very special because it is home to endemic bird species.
Prior to the Civil War, this area was one of the most important coffee-growing regions in Angola. Unfortunately, it has not been able to build on this previous success until now. Take advantage of the scenery before returning to Luanda. The estimated time to arrive in Luanda is around 6 p.m.
