The Rwanda Liberation Museum is located in the northeast of Kigali, in the Gicumbi District of the Northern Province, at Mulindi. It is about 80 kilometers from Kigali.
A visit to this museum provides deep insight into the Rwandan Liberation struggle, which brought an end to the 1994 genocide between the Tutsis and Hutus.
The struggle was led by the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) and the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) from 1990 to 1994.
The Rwanda Liberation Museum is one of the best places to learn the stories of determination, courage, defiance, victory, and heartbreak connected to that period.
It is one of the top places in Rwanda to explore this part of the country’s history.
What the Museum Showcases
The museum showcases many events that took place before, during, and after the liberation struggle, displayed through texts, visuals, and artifacts.
Notable exhibits include objects from the bunker that protected the chairman of the high command, now President of Rwanda, H.E. Paul Kagame.
Other exhibits include the Arusha Agreement, material connected to the campaign against genocide, and RPA and RPF communication equipment used for mobilization, along with other related items.
Visitors are often fascinated by the bunkers that protected H.E. Paul Kagame and other leaders during the struggle.
