Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is mostly known for gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation, but there are many other activities to enjoy in the forest, such as bird watching, wildlife viewing, guided nature walks, hiking, biking, and cultural encounters.
The beautiful Buniga Forest is part of the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in southwestern Uganda. Buniga Forest was created by the Nkuringo Community Conservation and Development Foundation (NCDF) to protect the forest and manage eco-tourism projects that benefit the local community.
Buniga Forest is home to some mammal species, primates, various bird species, and much more.
Meeting the Batwa on the Buniga Forest Trail
The Buniga Forest Trail also gives visitors a chance to meet the local people known as the Batwa, or pygmies, who were the first inhabitants of the forest. The Batwa lived in Bwindi Forest for over 500,000 years, relying on it for food, medicine, and shelter, until they were displaced when the area was declared a national park.
The Batwa people are now adapting to new ways of living outside the forest, but life is very difficult for them. Many of them work on Bakiga farms under the scorching sun every day.
When you take the Buniga Forest Trail in Bwindi, your guide will lead you through the forest and show how the Batwa used to live there. This includes demonstrations of how they made fire, hunted animals, and used medicinal plants.
Visitors can also enjoy traditional Batwa dances and songs while at Buniga Forest. Additionally, you can learn skills such as basket weaving and cooking local food. Supporting the community by buying handmade crafts is a great way to take home souvenirs while helping the locals.
Gorilla Trekking After Buniga Forest Hike
Buniga Forest is located in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. This sector is home to habituated mountain gorilla families that you can visit. Seeing endangered mountain gorillas is every traveler’s dream and should be part of your visit to Buniga Forest.
Gorilla trekking can take 2 to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once the family is found, visitors are allowed one hour to observe them and take photos of these close relatives.
Gorilla Habituation After Buniga Forest Hike
Mountain gorilla habituation is the process of getting mountain gorillas used to human presence. This unique experience is only available in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
The Nkuringo sector, where the Buniga Trail is located, is not far from Rushaga. Tourists can join rangers and researchers in their daily work of gorilla habituation and spend four hours with the mountain gorillas.
Supporting the Batwa Community
Income from forest walks and village experiences is given back to the Batwa community. This helps encourage locals to conserve the forest and protect the endangered mountain gorillas. The Buniga Forest Trail takes about two hours and offers a chance to explore the forest’s unique flora and fauna.
Combining Buniga Forest With Other Nkuringo Activities
Because Buniga Forest sits within the Nkuringo sector, it pairs naturally with gorilla trekking or a visit to Rushaga for gorilla habituation, giving travelers a well-rounded day that combines cultural learning with wildlife encounters. Many visitors choose to fit the two-hour Buniga trail in either the day before or after their gorilla trek, making it an easy addition to a Bwindi itinerary without requiring extra travel time between sectors.
