Want to learn how to survive a gorilla attack? Gorillas are very peaceful and calm primates, although people often mistake them for being violent.

Mountain gorillas only attack humans or other animals when they are disturbed or feel uncomfortable with their presence.

Gorillas are very strong and will protect their families if they sense danger. When threatened, they may beat their chests, make loud grunts, and stand on two legs to warn the intruder.

If the threat does not go away, a gorilla may attack by scratching, biting, hitting, and even dragging someone by the hand or leg.

Ways to Survive a Gorilla Attack

1. Walk away steadily. Mountain gorillas may charge when they feel unsafe during the trekking hour. Tourists are advised to slowly step back and walk away without rushing. Never run from a gorilla, since it may chase and attack you. No human can fight and win against a mountain gorilla.

2. Crouch down. Crouching down when a gorilla is charging is helpful. Bend down and make yourself look small. If a gorilla sees that you are not challenging it, it may calm down and leave you alone.

3. Follow gorilla trekking rules and regulations. To avoid any attack, always follow the gorilla trekking rules. Your ranger guide will explain what to do and what not to do when you are near the gorillas.

4. Pretend to be an ape. Another way to survive a gorilla charge is to act like a gorilla. You can pretend to chew leaves, pull some plants, or lie on the ground. This will make you look like one of the forest animals, and the gorilla may lose interest in you.

5. Show your teeth. If a gorilla comes too close and you cannot move away or crouch, show your teeth and scream. This may scare the gorilla and make it think you are another wild gorilla.

6. Do not look directly into the gorilla’s eyes. Mountain gorillas do not like eye contact. If a gorilla charges, avoid looking directly into its eyes. Look away and act uninterested. This may help calm the gorilla.

7. Keep a safe distance. Always stay at least 7 meters away from the gorillas. Do not try to touch them. Only let them come close if they choose to, and do not make any sudden moves. Getting too close may make them charge.

Final Thoughts

Mountain gorillas usually do not attack unless they are disturbed. They always give warning signs before charging.

The best way to stay safe is to follow all the trekking rules given during the briefing and listen to the park ranger while near the gorillas. Ready to experience it safely for yourself? Check out our gorilla trekking tours.
