Murambi Genocide Memorial: History & Visitor Guide

Situated in Murambi Village, Remera Cell, Nyamagabe District in the Southern Province, Murambi Memorial is one of the most important historical sites in Rwanda.

It gives tourists a deep understanding of what happened during the 1994 genocide. The site is 126 kilometers from Kigali and 3.5 kilometers from Nyamagabe town.

Murambi Genocide Memorial, formerly Murambi Technical School, is the burial site for over 50,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Tours of the memorial site are often led by survivors of the genocide.

The memorial center officially opened to visitors on May 26, 2011. It was originally known as Murambi Technical Institute and remains one of Rwanda’s key historical sites.

Other genocide memorial sites in Rwanda include Nyamata Memorial, Nyanza Memorial, Kigali or Gisozi Memorial, Nyarubuye Memorial, Ntarama Memorial, Bisesero Memorial, and others.

The 1994 Rwandan Genocide

The Rwandan genocide of 1994 was a horrific event in which over 800,000 people lost their lives within 100 days, during a period of civil war between the Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups.

Murambi Memorial, like many other genocide sites, preserves the remains of victims, along with personal belongings such as clothes, shoes, and photographs.

These memorial sites serve as lasting reminders of the 1994 genocide, which Rwandans have vowed never to allow to happen again.

Survivors also visit these memorial centers to connect with the memory of loved ones lost.

Other Memorial Centers

Kigali Genocide Memorial: The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the most accessible genocide site in Rwanda, located just a 10 minute drive from the center of Kigali. Situated in Gisozi, it is the burial site for 250,000 victims of the genocide. The memorial displays exhibits related to the victims, including personal belongings and photographs.

Nyamata Memorial: Nyamata Memorial is located 30 kilometers south of Kigali. It is the resting place for 25,000 victims of the genocide. Many Tutsis had gathered there, believing it to be a safe refuge, but it became a site of mass killing when militia forces broke in.

Nyanza Memorial: The Nyanza Memorial is located at Ecole Technique Officielle in Kicukiro District, Kigali. It is the site where annual commemorations are held every April, with thousands gathering to honor the victims of the genocide.

Bisesero Genocide Memorial: Bisesero Memorial is 60 kilometers from Kibuye and is the resting place for over 40,000 victims. This site tells the story of how Tutsis in the area resisted, using stones and sticks as their only means of defense.

Nyarubuye Memorial: Nyarubuye Memorial is 140 kilometers from Kigali and is the burial site for 2,000 victims. Another accessible memorial, Ntarama Memorial, is located about an hour’s drive from Kigali, where over 5,000 victims of the genocide are buried.

Why These Sites Matter

These genocide memorials preserve Rwanda’s history and remind the world of the importance of peace and reconciliation, standing as places of remembrance for the victims and lessons for future generations.
