Detailed 3-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Musanze
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, meet your safari guide and company representative. Begin with a short Kigali city tour that includes lunch at Hotel Mille Collines (featured in “Hotel Rwanda”), a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and shopping for local crafts at Caplaki Crafts Village.
After the city tour, transfer to Musanze, the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park. The drive offers views of Rwanda’s hills and farmlands. Arrive in the evening for dinner and overnight at your lodge as you prepare for your gorilla trekking adventure the next day.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking & Iby’Iwacu Cultural Visit
Begin early with breakfast, then transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing about gorilla trekking in Rwanda. After the briefing, start your trek into the forest to find a gorilla family.
The trek can take between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the gorillas’ movement. When you find them, spend one full hour observing and taking photos. After trekking, return to the park headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate, then head to your lodge for lunch and rest.
In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village to experience traditional Rwandan dances and learn about local community life. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Dian Fossey Hike & Return to Kigali
Start the day with an early breakfast, then drive to the Karisoke Research Center for the Dian Fossey hike. Dian Fossey was an American primatologist who worked for many years to protect Rwanda’s mountain gorillas. Her grave is found near the ruins of the Karisoke Research Center.
After the hike, transfer back to Kigali for your departure flight or drop-off at your hotel.
