Why Booking Gorilla Permits Early Is Crucial for Treks

Below are the reasons why you should book gorilla trekking permits in advance:

High demand for gorilla trekking permits

Many travelers who visit Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of Congo want to go gorilla trekking. This has caused a high demand for permits, which are limited in number. Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, so you need to book early before they sell out.

Enough time for preparation

Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude areas, and trekking to see them requires hiking and physical fitness. Booking your permit early gives you enough time to prepare. This includes doing physical exercise and getting the right gear, such as hiking boots, cameras, lenses, gloves, insect repellent, raincoats, and other equipment.

Timely booking of accommodation

This mainly applies to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. The park has four sectors where gorilla trekking takes place, and you need to book a lodge near the sector where your trek will happen. Booking your permit early helps you also secure accommodation in the correct sector.

Shortage of gorilla permits

Another reason to book your permit early is that permits are limited. Rwanda charges $1500 for a gorilla permit, which is expensive. Congo offers cheaper permits at $400, but sometimes the country is not secure. Uganda has become the best option for most travelers because it is safe and the permit costs $800. This has caused high demand in Uganda, so you must book 3 to 6 months in advance.

All travelers planning to go gorilla trekking should book their permits early and either pay in full or make a deposit to reserve the permit. Coming to the country without a permit might lead to disappointment if no permits are available. Also, remember that tourists showing signs of illness or under the age of 15 will not be allowed to trek mountain gorillas.
