This 5-day Burundi safari starts and ends in the capital city, Bujumbura. The trip includes a sunrise fishing experience at Lake Tanganyika, visits to the Livingstone-Stanley Museum, a chimpanzee trek at Vyanda Nature Reserve, a tour of Teza tea plantation, and ends with a transfer to the airport.
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Hotel
When you arrive at Bujumbura International Airport, you will be met by our driver guide who speaks both English and French. They will give you information about your stay in Burundi, then take you to your hotel for the night, Hotel du Lac Tanganyika.
Day 2: Sunrise Fishing at Lake Tanganyika and City Tour
After breakfast, at about 5:15 AM, you will head to Lake Tanganyika Beach to watch the sunrise. You will board a boat and enjoy the calm lake and scenery while taking pictures.
Lake Tanganyika is the second largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. It is 673 km long and 72 km wide. It is popular for boating and fishing. You will learn about the fishermen as you enjoy the sunrise.
In the evening, you will take a tour of Bujumbura town, visiting the mausoleum of Prince Louis Rwagasore and the Livingstone-Stanley Museum. You will learn more about Burundi’s culture before returning to your hotel.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trek at Vyanda Nature Reserve & Village Walk
After breakfast, you will drive a short distance to Vyanda Nature Reserve for a chimpanzee trek. Chimpanzees are our closest relatives, sharing over 80% of our genes. The reserve is near Lake Tanganyika, so you might see other animals on the way. You will spend time with the chimpanzees, take photos, and then return to your hotel for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will take a village walk where you will meet local people and learn about their way of life and how they protect wildlife in the reserve.
Day 4: Tour of Teza Tea Plantation
After breakfast, you will visit Teza Tea Factory for a day tour. You will see how tea is grown and processed. The green tea fields are peaceful, and the fresh country air feels good.
You will learn about tea from farm to cup and sample different types of tea while visiting local farmers’ homes. Whether you like black tea or not, you will enjoy this tea’s unique flavor.
The area produces enough tea for the international market, so you can buy some to take home. After the tour, you will return to your hotel, Residence Ubuntu.
Day 5: Visit Saga Beach and Departure
After breakfast, you will visit Saga Beach, a beautiful sandy beach. Depending on your flight time, you can relax and swim before you are taken to Bujumbura International Airport to catch your flight home, carrying great memories of Burundi.
