The 4 Days Congo Lowland Double Gorilla Trek takes visitors to see the Eastern Lowland gorillas in their natural home. You will visit two different gorilla families on two separate trekking days. Each trek gives you one full hour with the gorillas to take photos, record videos, and enjoy a close-up view of their behavior.
These gorillas are the largest type of primates. During this tour, you will also visit places like the Nyanza Palace Museum, pass through Nyungwe Forest where you may spot some primates, and optionally enjoy a short city tour in Kigali.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Head to Kahuzi-Biega National Park from Kigali
Our driver guide will meet you and give a short briefing about the tour. You will then begin the journey to the Democratic Republic of Congo and drive straight to Bukavu town, near Kahuzi-Biega National Park. This park is one of the few protected areas that are home to the rare Eastern Lowland gorillas.
It lies between Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega. You will arrive and check in at the safari lodge, where you will spend three nights.
Day 2: First Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking Experience
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing. This will take about 30 minutes. The park ranger will guide you on how to behave while in the forest. Be sure to dress in the right trekking clothes, such as a long-sleeved shirt, gloves, and a hat.
Begin the trek with your guide, who will help you find the gorillas. Once located, spend one hour observing their behavior and taking photos. After the trek, return to the lodge and relax for the rest of the day.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking Experience
After breakfast, go back for another briefing at the park. You will be assigned a new gorilla family to trek and then start the walk with the help of a ranger who knows the area well.
Once you find the gorillas, spend an hour watching them and capturing special moments on camera. The trekking time can vary, sometimes taking up to 8 hours depending on how far the gorillas moved the night before. After the trek, return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 4: Travel Back to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, leave the lodge and begin the drive back to Kigali. Along the way, stop at the former presidential palace museum in Nyanza. Here, you will learn about the former Rwandan president and how he died in a plane crash.
Once you arrive in Kigali, you may go on an optional city tour before heading to the airport. This marks the end of your 4 Days Congo Lowland Double Gorilla Trek.
