5-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Marangu Gate & Hike to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

Your driver guide will pick you up from Arusha and give you a short briefing before transferring you to Marangu Gate to start your 5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek.

At the gate, register for the climb, meet your local guide, and hire porters to carry your extra luggage. Begin your 6-hour hike through thick rainforest filled with birds, monkeys, and lush vegetation.

Arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will spend the night and enjoy your first evening on the mountain.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

After breakfast, continue your hike toward Horombo Hut. The trail passes through moorland vegetation with giant lobelia and groundsel plants.

Stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy views of Maundi Crater and Kibo Peak in the distance. The hike takes about 6 hours.

Evening temperatures at Horombo can drop close to freezing, so prepare warm clothing for the night.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

After an early breakfast, continue ascending toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes more barren, and you’ll enter the alpine desert zone.

Carry plenty of drinking water, energy snacks, and a packed lunch, as this will be one of the more challenging parts of your trek.

The hike takes about 6 hours. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, have an early dinner and rest by 7:00 PM to prepare for the summit climb. This is the most important night of your 5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,896m) & Descend to Horombo Hut

Wake up around midnight for the final climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Have a light snack and bring your headlamp and walking stick.

The hike to the summit takes about 6 hours. As you climb through the snow and cold winds, stay motivated for the rewarding view at the top.

Reaching Uhuru Peak is a proud moment. Take photos at the summit sign to mark your achievement.

After some time at the peak, descend back to Horombo Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Descend to Marangu Gate & Drive to Arusha

After breakfast, continue descending through the rainforest to Marangu Gate.

Sign out, return any rented gear, and receive your Kilimanjaro climbing certificate as a souvenir of your success.

Meet your driver for the transfer back to Arusha, marking the end of your 5-Day Kilimanjaro Trek.
