Boomu Womens Camp

Boomu women’s camp, is situated at the edge of Murchison falls national park, the name of the camp is derived from a local word “Boomu” to mean “Together” just as the group was created by women to work together for mutual benefit and Benefit of the communities.

The group was started in 1991 by a group of 40 women from Kiragara and Kihaguzi villages who had little produce left over to sell, it was formed to reduce poverty, malnutrition and providing an income for members to be able to pay their children’s fees.

The camp is approximately located 100 yards from Murchison falls entrance and less than 10 kilometres from Kaniyo Pabidi chimpanzee eco tourist viewing site, the group is also under  Uganda Community Tourism Association.  This is one of the best budget options close to Murchison falls national park.

Boomu women’s camp also has a craft shop with beautiful locally handmade materials where you can, you can also rent a car for self drive Uganda safari tours or and camping gears at the camp for self camping.

Boomu women’s camp is composed of 7 bandas, one double banda and a building with 2 triple rooms with shared bathroom facilities, mosquito nets and powered lights, showers with cold and hot water to make your stay comfortable.

Activities

Village walks

At Boomu womens camp, village walks can be organized for you to explore the typical African countryside and learn about peoples ways of life and how their houses are built in African architecture style. You can interact with the locals and listen to their stories of how they live their day to day lives.

Bird watching

Uganda bird watching at Boomu women’s camp can be done at the lodge gardens or at the famous Budongo forest the largest Mahogany forest in East Africa and home to chimpanzees. The common forest birds found at Budongo forest include; crested guinea fowl, fork tailed drongo, olive breasted greenbul, African pied wagtail, black kite, African dwarf kingfisher and lemon bellied crombec among others. The forest is home to about 360 species of birds 60 of which are considered to be west or central African birds.

Basket weaving lessons

The craft shop at the camp is not only a shop but also a place where you can learn to make locally handmade materials like basket weaving and so much more using local materials such as wood, fibre and so much more. you can buy some of this materials to support the camp and take back home for remembrance or to loved ones as gifts.

Cooking demonstrations

At Boomu women’s camp, you will have a chance to learn how to prepare your favorite local Ugandan meal with guidance from a local experienced chef, after cooking the meal you can eat it as well and enjoy.

How to get there

Murchison falls national park can be reached within 5 hours drive from Kampala, those who don’t like road transport can fly to Chobe or Pakuba airstrips in the park from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airfield.
