Wildebeest migration is the movement of more than two million animals across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It intensifies during the dry season when there is no pasture in Serengeti National Park. This forces wildebeests, zebras (which feed on tall grass), and gazelles to cross over to Masai Mara National Reserve, where green vegetation is abundant. However, this is not a permanent move, as they later return to their homeland after allowing the grass to grow.
This majestic migration attracts people from all over the world who come to witness wonders they’ve never seen before.
The most favorable seasons to observe the wildebeest include:
- January to March: During this period, grass is scarce, providing a clear view of the area for observing the migrating animals. Although there may be afternoon rain, it doesn’t significantly affect your tour since it is short-lived. The temperatures in the area are high, with highs around 28°C and lows near 15°C. Most of the female wildebeests are about to give birth, so they move to find enough pasture for their young ones, and migration takes place in February in the Ndutu plains.
- March to May: These months receive long periods of rainfall, making the soils moist and enabling the growth of green vegetation. In mid-March, the Thomson’s gazelles continue giving birth and move to areas with abundant food. Predators also join in the Ndutu and feast on the meat in the area, creating a unique coexistence where lions and cheetahs share the same territory in peace.
- June to December: The great migration is in December, offering a beautiful and amazing spectacle. Short rains start in October and early November, allowing the grass to grow in Masai Mara. The wildebeests move down from Kenya into the eastern limits of Serengeti, past Namiri Plains. The journey begins in August, and they cross the Mara River, even facing hungry crocodiles. They spread throughout the northern region of the Masai Mara National Reserve, while some remain in the Northern Serengeti. During this period, predators gather at the river, causing tension among the animals when crossing, resulting in many losing their lives. By September to October, the chaos ceases.
