July Wildebeest Migration – Serengeti’s Dramatic River Crossings

Rainfall is rare in July, with relatively warm, fine, and beautiful sunny skies reflecting bright rays on Earth during the day, with intense heat in the afternoon but cool temperatures during the morning hours. It’s at this time that the “gnu” (wildebeest), a member of the antelope family possessing a large, box-like head with curving horns, migrates to the northern circuit of Serengeti. Here, they expect to feed on grass containing proteins, fiber, lipids, and water-soluble carbohydrates. These nutrients boost their body growth and help female herds in milk production for their young ones. As the month nears its end, they begin crossing the mighty Mara River, encountering the predators who feast on the slow runners while crossing over to Kogatende or Lamai. One must be patient, as good things are worth waiting for. Some days they appear in great numbers, while on others, there are fewer, so always stay alert not to miss anything.

Activities

  • Game drives: In the very early morning, most tourists are driven near the Mara River to witness the struggling wildebeest, with hungry predators lining up for their breakfast. This is a heart-pounding experience that compels travelers to film the process, significantly promoting the Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve. Others prefer the afternoon shift, where they observe elephants standing at a distance and take in the vibration on the land originating from the wildebeest crossing. Some may want a mixed adventure, watching other animal species while viewing these amazing creatures, so book morning and evening shifts.
  • Nature walk: For a proper spotting pause, look no further than a nature walk. It not only enables you to observe animals but also nature. Expand your excitement by taking part in this particular activity.
  • Hot air balloon safari: Those who enjoy elevated platforms can try this activity, which enables you to view beyond your limits. Don’t let the blue skies limit you when you can “fly to the moon” with this activity. You will not regret it.

Jobs fill your pockets, but adventures fill your soul. Take some time to relax and come feel the calm air in Tanzania or Kenya.
