January Wildebeest Migration – Serengeti’s Unique Wildlife Event

The hot, humid summer month of January attracts a variety of people from all over the world who come to witness the astounding movement of wildebeest species with broad muzzles, Roman noses, and shaggy manes, accompanied by zebras and gazelles. These animals migrate in the Northern corridor during calving to find nutritious grass for their young ones, and finally go to the northern circuit of the Ngorongoro crater highlands, where they also nurture their calves. During the dry season in late January, the grass is short, so they can easily spot the hiding areas of predators, providing enough protection to their young ones. However, it does not guarantee that hungry lions will not attack, which is why it is referred to as the month of birth and death.

Accommodations in the Serengeti

As you wait for the migration to take place in the month of January, you can take a nap in well-facilitated hotels with spacious parking areas, deluxe restaurants offering menus with both local and foreign dishes, and classy washrooms, to mention a few. These include:

  • Chaka, a mid-range hotel with an excellent overall experience
  • Kiota, Namiri Plains with the best location in all of the Serengeti locality

Nature walk: Restrictions are put in place for those who trek throughout the park to ensure the safety of animals and guests. Noise is prohibited, littering is a crime since dumping cans are usually placed at different spots in the area, and feeding wild animals is not allowed. Guests are always urged to follow instructions to have a comfortable stay in the parks.

Camping: Many tourists participate in camping, which can be either private or public depending on one’s budget. Bush dishes are enjoyed during camping, and campfires are lit during night hours, accompanied by storytelling and songs. Some restrictions and recommendations include:

  • Urinating near the camping site is prohibited, as some animal species can detect the smell of urine.
  • It’s always advised to wear earth-toned clothes during any African safari.
  • Travelers are advised to bring a medical personnel or be well knowledgeable with a first aid kit, which contains bandages, scissors, safety pins, cotton, spirit, to mention a few.
  • It’s not advisable to tell stories about animal attacks during camping, as it may frighten some guests and make their stay unpleasant.
