Moru Kopje – Serengeti’s Unique Geological and Wildlife Marvel

The magic of an African Safari lies in the untamed Moru Kopje, one of the fascinating places in Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, covering a total area of 45 square miles. It provides ample space for over 2000 black rhinos and other wildlife. ‘Black is beautiful,’ as quoted by visitors who catch a glimpse of the black rhino that almost dominates the entire area, standing as the main species in this wild setting. One cannot take their eyes off them as they graze peacefully and walk gently alongside river banks.

Moru Kopje is also home to other wild animals, including rock-climbing lions known as the ‘kings of the jungle, undefeated,’ the giant elephants that roam the plains, waterbuck, leopards among the cat family, rock hyrax, impala, buffalo, baboons, the black and white striped zebras, and wildebeests, which are known for their great movement during calving season, yielding more than 8000 calves each day. This spectacle enchants visitors in this area, providing a glimpse of paradise, which typically occurs during the months of January and February.

Moru Kopje is composed of Gong rocks, caves, and unique Masai rock paintings made from a collection of different materials from the Moru mountains, making it an exclusive historical site that attracts numerous researchers. They explore the area led by well-skilled and trained tour guides. The area is also adorned with candelabra trees, also known as desert cacti, and spiny trees that grow to about 9 meters tall in the well-drained soil of Moru Kopje, providing a habitat for the climbing lions during the hot season.

The adventure doesn’t stop at Kopje; it offers a variety of activities on its menu, such as:

  • Camping, typically done at Olei Serai Luxury Camp, strategically located at Moru Kopje. Here, visitors can enjoy not only the migration but also the comfort of royal bedding, clean bathrooms, free WiFi, laundry services, and more.
  • A hot air balloon safari for tourists who want to view all corners of the National Park while feeling the calm blowing wind in the air.
  • Nature walks for those who want to experience the wild landscape and get up close to grazing animal species.
  • Game drives, which are highly popular due to their comfort and the availability of drinks kept in the mini-freezer to quench thirsty throats.

So, without any hesitation, let touring Moru Kopje be your choice for this holiday.
