Shira Peak is the third-highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro. It consists mainly of basic lavas and some pyroclastic materials. Mawenzi and Shira were originally separate volcanoes, with their peaks located 18 miles apart. A third vent later formed between them, and its eruption covered the western part of Mawenzi and the eastern part of Shira.
At the Shira plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s three peaks is found: the third-highest point, Johnsell Point, standing at an elevation of 3,962 meters above sea level. Shira is the oldest and smallest of the three peaks. Volcanic activity at Shira began 2.5 million years ago, with its last major eruption occurring 1.9 million years ago. As a result, Shira and Mawenzi are considered extinct, while Kibo remains dormant but potentially active.
Hiking on the Shira Plateau
Hikes on the Shira plateau can range from one day to several days, allowing climbers who do not wish to reach the summit to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s beauty and superb views of the summit. These hikes typically start at 3,600 meters, passing through one of the base camps.
The expansive Shira plateau extends 13 kilometers westward, rising from 3,500 meters to 3,962 meters above sea level near the Simba River. The plateau was formed about 500,000 years ago due to erosion of the volcanic caldera. Before the erosion, Shira likely reached heights of 4,900 to 5,200 meters.
