The Ndoha Plains are famously known for wildebeest migration. During the months of April and May, wildebeests can be observed walking across the plains of Ndoha, located in the western corridor, as they journey to the north of Serengeti National Reserve. The Ndoha Plains, even during the dry season, manage to maintain some green grass that sustains these animal species for some time. The area is characterized by woodlands, whistling thorns, and grassland vegetation. It’s not congested, and it’s usually peaceful, as there are few lodges and camps, and it’s quite distant from Seronera. Most tourists prefer to stay within the park premises, where they can easily find what they need.
The area is home to a variety of wild species, including zebras, rhinos, buffaloes, antelopes, and more. To witness the food chain in action among different animal species, it’s best to arrive early when all the animals are active, with herbivores grazing on grass, carnivores hunting prey, and birds seeking seeds.
There are numerous activities for travelers to partake in, ensuring they won’t get bored as they await the amazing migration. These activities include a hot air balloon ride, providing a unique perspective of the migration from the air while also offering views of other species, such as birds like herons, Goliath herons, Kori bustards, Marabou storks, Grey crowned cranes, Southern ground hornbills, white-backed vultures, superb starlings, and many others. Carnivals like lions can be observed targeting the innocent wildebeests, and even crocodiles that prey on the weaker ones. Camping is also a popular activity, where many people gather in this locality, lighting campfires and sharing stories over food and drinks to stave off boredom. Both private and public camps are available, catering to different preferences. Some mobile camps are specifically organized for the wildebeest migration, offering flexibility. Examples include Grumeti Migration Camp, Mbugani Migration Camp, Serena Kirawira Tented Camp, and many others.
Nature walks are an activity you can’t afford to miss when in the Ndoha Plains. This is usually preferred by adventure seekers who enjoy the outdoors and don’t mind walking with the animals. However, it’s always important to keep a safe distance from wildlife, as they are not friendly to humans.
