BEST TIME TO SEE WILDEBEEST

The best time to observe the wildebeest migration is determined by climatic changes. These animal species react to climatic seasons differently. In the months of January to March, dry conditions prevail, forcing the wildebeest to settle in the Ndutu Plains, located in the southeast of Serengeti National Park within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. However, this is not a permanent settlement; it’s a refuge when they are about to give birth, during the calving season. They need ample pasture for their young ones. Despite facing various difficulties, the mothers are always fighters and do not give up when it comes to their young ones.
By the end of March, the long rains begin, leading to rising water levels. This becomes quite dangerous for the animals, especially after giving birth to nearly 8,000 calves. Instead of crossing, they extend further northwards, passing through Maswa Game Reserve, and eventually spreading to the east and west.
The long rains finally subside in early April, causing these species to scatter as they head toward the Mara River. It can be challenging to view the scattered animals, but targeting near waterholes is the best strategy since they move in search of green savanna grass and water. So, don’t be discouraged; these are also good months to see the wildebeest species.
By June, these species would have moved to the western Grumeti area, crossing the swollen waters of the Grumeti River. This is a dangerous period, as many of these animals lose their lives, especially the young ones who cannot fend off the strong crocodiles and the predators that wait on the riverbanks. This season comes with inconveniences like the land becoming muddy, requiring tourists to pack gumboots and rain jackets, and difficulties in predicting the next step of these species.
July to August finally arrive, and these months are mainly for river crossings at Masai Mara. It takes several days for these animals to cross in shifts, accompanied by zebras and gazelles. The reason for following is the same as the wildebeest. By the end of August, the remaining wildebeests settle in Masai Mara National Reserve. In September to October, these species divide themselves into groups. Some cross first and remain at the banks of the Mara River, while others stay in the north of Serengeti. This leads to occasional crossings between Kogatende and Lamai areas, even during another dry season, or during the period of receiving short afternoon rains, specifically in the months of November to December.
All months can suit every traveler’s taste, so any time of the year is preferable and welcoming.
