The Best Time to Observe the Wildebeest Migration – The best time to watch the wildebeest migration depends on changes in the weather.
These animals react differently to different seasons.
- January to March: During these months, dry conditions force the wildebeests to settle in the Ndutu Plains in the southeast of Serengeti National Park, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is not a permanent home but a safe place for the calving season. Here, they give birth and need plenty of grass for their young. Despite challenges, the mothers protect their calves and never give up.
- March to April: By the end of March, the long rains begin, causing water levels to rise. This creates dangers for the animals, especially after they have given birth to about 8,000 calves. Instead of crossing rivers, the herds move further north, passing through Maswa Game Reserve and spreading east and west. The rains ease in early April, and the wildebeests scatter while heading toward the Mara River. Although it can be hard to see them when they are spread out, focusing near waterholes is a good strategy since they search for green grass and water. Don’t lose hope; this is still a good time to see them.
- June: By June, the herds reach the western Grumeti area, where they cross the swollen waters of the Grumeti River. This is a dangerous time as many animals, especially young ones, fall victim to crocodiles and predators waiting along the riverbanks. Tourists visiting during this time should prepare for muddy conditions and pack gumboots and rain jackets. Predicting the herds’ movements can also be challenging.
- July to August: These months are the peak of river crossings at the Masai Mara. The wildebeests cross the river in groups over several days, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, which follow for the same reasons—food and water. By late August, the remaining wildebeests settle in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
- September to October: During these months, the herds split into smaller groups. Some cross the river and remain near the Mara River banks, while others stay in the northern Serengeti. This leads to occasional crossings between the Kogatende and Lamai areas. Even during the dry season or short afternoon rains in November and December, some wildebeests continue crossing.
