Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro – Seasonal Guide for Trekkers

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro – Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the tallest mountain in Africa, standing at an elevation of 5,895 meters above sea level.

Mount Kilimanjaro was formed through volcanic activity, resulting in three volcanic cones: Mawenzi, Shira, and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant and could erupt again, though its last eruption occurred 200,000 years ago.

Approximately 30,000 people attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro every year, but nearly half fail to reach the summit. The main reason for failure is altitude sickness, which can affect anyone, regardless of physical fitness. To increase your chances of success, it is recommended to choose longer routes that allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude.

What is the Hardest Route for Climbing Kilimanjaro

Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro vary with the seasons and across the mountain’s different climatic zones. At the base, the temperature averages between 21°C and 27°C, while at the summit, it can drop to -7°C to -29°C. The weather is often unpredictable, so trekkers should be prepared for all conditions.

Trekkers experience five ecological zones during the climb: the cultivated zone, rain-forest zone, heath or moorland zone, alpine desert zone, and arctic zone.

Although Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, certain months offer better conditions than others. Knowing the best time to climb is crucial for a successful and enjoyable trek.

December to February:

  • This period marks the short dry season on Kilimanjaro, following the November rains.
  • It is considered the best time to climb Kilimanjaro due to clear skies and favorable weather.
  • Grass is lush and green, making it easier to spot wildlife.
  • Photographers will find this time ideal for capturing beautiful scenery.
  • Clear skies provide excellent views at the summit.

June to September:

  • This is the best overall time for climbing Kilimanjaro.
  • It coincides with European and U.S. summer holidays, making it convenient for many international trekkers.
  • Hiking trails are in good condition with minimal rainfall, especially in July and August.
  • Clear weather ensures good views throughout the trek.
  • It is also a great time to visit other Tanzanian national parks, allowing for a combined Kilimanjaro and safari experience.
  • The only downside is that the mountain may be crowded during this period.

March to May and October to November:

  • These months are the wet seasons on Kilimanjaro.
  • Climbing is possible, but trekkers may face challenges due to rain, muddy and slippery trails, and snowy conditions at the summit.
  • Views may not be as clear as during the dry seasons.
  • Some tour companies offer off-season rates, making this period attractive for budget travelers.
  • The mountain is less crowded compared to the dry months.

By choosing the best time to climb based on your preferences and priorities, you can enjoy a safer and more enjoyable experience on Mount Kilimanjaro.
