Serengeti Airstrips – Your Gateways to Safari Adventures

Access to Serengeti National Park is possible by both road and air, with many tourists opting for air travel to reach the park. Amidst the fields of golden grass of the Savannah, several airstrips handle various guest airplanes flying in from across Tanzania. Short shuttle flights are available from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Arusha Airport, and Kilimanjaro International Airport, offering the most convenient way to get to Serengeti National Park. Depending on the area of the park you are traveling to, you will land at one of the following airstrips:

  • Seronera Airstrip: Located in the heart of Serengeti National Park, Seronera Airstrip serves both small regional aircraft to nearby destinations and domestic chartered flights to the park. Accommodations near this airstrip include Four Seasons, Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge, One Nature Nyaruswiga, Lemala Ewanjan Camp, Siringit Camp, Ehlane Plains, and Namiri Plains. Transfers to and from the Seronera Airstrip are included while staying at these lodges.
  • Kogatende Airstrip: Positioned on the southern banks of the Mara River in the northern part of Serengeti National Park, Kogatende Airstrip provides easy access to remote areas of the park. It is the most convenient airport for accessing the isolated section of the park, offering panoramic views of the scenery, including the annual wildebeest great migration. Accommodations near Kogatende Airstrip include Singita Mara River Tented Camp, Lemala Kuria Hills, Serengeti Bush Tops, Nomad Lamai, and Kimondo Migration Camp.
  • Sasakwa Airstrip: Located in the western corridor of the park, Sasakwa Airstrip covers 400 acres of unrivaled wilderness and is part of the famous migration path. It attracts a high number of wildlife species, including herbivores like elephants, giraffes, and buffaloes, as well as carnivores like lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. Accommodations near Sasakwa Airstrip include Singita Sabora Tented Camp, Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Singita Faru Faru, and AndBeyond Grumeti Tented Camp.
  • Lobo Airstrip: Situated in the remote northeastern section of Serengeti National Park, Lobo Airstrip is known for its high population of lions. The airstrip serves domestic flights for travelers wishing to explore the Lobo area or visit neighboring tourist destinations. Accommodations near Lobo Airstrip include AndBeyond Klein’s Camp, Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas, and Taasa Lodge.
  • Kusini Airstrip: Located near the Kusini Kopjes, where the annual wildebeest migration begins, Kusini Airstrip offers easy access to several accommodations, such as Sanctuary Kusini Camp, Kimondo Migration Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, and Nomad Serengeti Camp.
  • Fort Ikoma Airstrip: Located northwest of Serengeti National Park, Fort Ikoma Airstrip is rarely utilized due to its proximity to Seronera Airstrip. It is about 3km from Retima Hippo Pool, 1km from the Nyabogati Hippo Pool, and 1km from Fort Ikoma Gate.
  • Kirawira B Airstrip: In the western region of Serengeti National Park, Kirawira B Airstrip is situated next to Grumeti River. It is an ideal airstrip for visitors flying in from Mwanza, Tanzania’s second-largest city, with a flight duration of 3 hours.

Whether you choose to embark on a safari drive to Serengeti National Park or opt for a convenient flying safari with access to accommodations, you can enjoy every aspect of your safari adventure.
