Cultural Encounters
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park was inhabited by the Batwa people, also known as pygmies, who used to live together with mountain gorillas before it was made a national park.
The Batwa used to depend on the forest for shelter, food, and medicine but were displaced after living in the forest for over 500,000 years.
They now live at the edge of the forest and work in Bakiga farms.
You can visit the Batwa and learn more about their ways of life, get entertained with local traditional dances, and also go through the forest with a Batwa guide showing you how they used to hunt, use different plants for medicinal purposes, and so much more.
The Nkuringo sector of Bwindi is located 45 kilometers from Kabale town if you’re using the Kabale-Kisoro highway.
The sector can also be reached from Buhoma when using the Butogota route.
