Murchison falls national park is situated in the north western part of Uganda, it’s the country’s largest national park covering an area of 3,983 kilometres squared established in 1952 and it was formerly known as Kabalega national park but the name was later changed to Murchison falls.
The park is home to 76 species of mammals, 451 species of birds recorded of which 50 species are restricted to this range. Murchison falls is bisected by the world’s longest river that forces itself through a narrow gorge on the rift escarpment cascading into a strong waterfall.

Murchison falls national park is home to 76 species of mammals and primates like chimpanzees in Budongo forest. The best time for doing game drives is in the morning or afternoon hours and you will spot wildlife such as elephants, lions, leopards, warthogs, waterbucks, giraffes and other primates a part from chimpanzees include; black and white colobus monkeys, velvet monkeys, blue monkeys and so much more.
Bird watching
Murchison falls national park is a birders paradise endowed with over 451 species of birds recorded and 50 species restricted to the area, some of the examples of bird species found in the park include; Goliath heron, Black headed gonolek, African quail finch, African jacana, Black billed barbet, Swamp fly catcher, Blue headed coucal, Pied giant Kingfisher, Grey crowned crane and speckle fronted weaver among the rest.
A part from game drives and bird watching tourists can take a launch boat cruise to the world powerful waterfalls and view wildlife at the showers with hippos, crocodiles and water birds close to your boat. Once you reach the falls, you can then hike to the top for excellent views of Murchison falls national park.
How to get there
Murchison falls can be accessed in 5 hours from Kampala; you can also take a standard chartered flight to Chobe or Pakuba airstrip from Entebbe international airport or Kajjansi airstrip.
